Job Summary

The Histotechnician II is responsible for performing routine histotechnician II duties; embedding, cutting, processing, H&E staining/cover slipping, grossing. Processes a wide variety of surgical tissue, including GI specimens, tiny biopsies, lymph nodes, breast tissue and bone marrow. Sections paraffin embedded tissue at 1-7 microns and mounts on microscope slides. Performs a variety of specialty staining techniques, including immunohistochemical procedures, for microscopic evaluation. Guides, trains and may provide mentoring to students and/or technical staff as appropriate.

  • Embeds specimens paying attention to proper orientation depending on type and cut of tissue.
  • Processes specimens according to the type of specimen and the pathologist request.
  • Performs Microtomy and staining of paraffin embedded tissue according to instructions daily.
  • Maintains diagnostic viability of all specimens and ensures correct patient labeling.
  • Cuts, prepares, and stains slides from histology specimens. Routinely checks and verifies that surgical case numbers match blocks and slides; prints labels as appropriate.
  • Stains slides, using the basic H&E and special stain procedures, that are clear and acceptable to the pathologists.
  • Perform quality control on sections and staining procedures to ensure a high quality finished product.
  • Oversees workflow and quality of unlicensed Histotechnicians.
  • Performs special stains at the request of the pathologist using procedures in the department manual.
  • Adjusts staining procedure when results are not acceptable to the pathologist.
  • Prepares reagents and special stains.
  • Assist pathologist during frozen section processing whenever time allows
  • Keeps specimen slide and block files current and in accurate numerical order.
  • Maintains equipment to include, keeping maintenance records; performing maintenance as recommended by manufacturer and maintaining records of equipment malfunction and repairs.
  • Provides mentorship and training to support performance development for Histotechnicians.
  • Schedules staff work assignments, sets appropriate priorities when staff limited.
  • Recommends solutions to areas of need relative to workflow issues and operation challenges.
  • Employee must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the C-ICARE Standards of the Hospital. C-ICARE is the foundation of Stanford Healthcare

Job Qualifications

Education

  • Associates degree as Histologist Technician or BS in a Laboratory Science or Biologic Science
Experience

  • Five (5) years of work experience in histology or relevant experience
License/Certifications

  • Certified by the ASCP Board of Registry of Histologic Technician, HT (ASCP)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of technical proficiency in specialty areas within the laboratory
  • Understanding of the equipment used daily; including, tissue processors, embedding station, microtome, cover slipper, and cassette printer.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instruction
  • Adequate experience in routine histology to act as a resource for other team members.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload.
  • Ability to multitask and work in a fastpast, deadline driven environment.
  • Strong problemsolving skills
  • Knowledge of infection prevention, safety, hospital policies and joint commission standards.
