Why I've been MIA

Why I've been MIA

STE Ne
can you see the stars.
— he n Luther King tr: (2

I haven't forgotten about any of you on beBee and I'd like to remind so many what a great impression you've left with me. I've learned a lot and gained some wonderful friendships thanks to beBee.

Tonight someone messaged me on Facebook asking me to come back and telling me I was missed. My gut sunk because I don't want anyone to feel I've been avoiding you or beBee for personal reasons. My avoidance has been family related and unintentional. I must say, the person who got a hold of me struck a chord and made me homesick for those of you I've built relationships with over the years.

My life has turned upside down over the past year and in turn, it's caused me to withdraw in many ways. In part, withdrawing wasn't a conscience decision. My husband (as many of you know) has suffered from a few rare lung conditions and we were hoping things would begin to look up after his Doctors prescribed a medication with hopes of shrinking the many granulomas in his lungs so he would be able to breathe better. He was on the medication for a year and a half and had no improvements, as a matter of fact, he began developing lung infections and his breathing continued to decline.

31e476b2.jpg

When the doctors realized the Pulmonary drugs weren't working they decided there may be another issue affecting his breathing... his heart. I was really hoping they were wrong but they did find through testing that his heart had been affected, to what degree, they weren't sure at the time. It wasn't until June of this year, 2018, that the Doctors were able to pinpoint one specific problem, they found Diastolic Left Heart Failure after a series of tests including, a heart Catheterization. Before they came up with a diagnosis with new medical treatment I was feeling helpless and highly fearful. I kept telling my mind not to go 'there' but it did. For the first time in my life, I was gripped with the fear of losing my husband. We have been going back and forth to Doctors since 2011 and it wasn't until this year they were able to pinpoint another issue. What really upsets me is the fact that he had a heart Catheterization in 2011 at a different hospital and it showed "Mild Pulmonary Hypertension." I had no clue what that meant but the Cardiologist at the time said he wasn't concerned about it.

The Cardiologist he did see in 2011 should have followed up with my husband after the initial results of the Cath but he didn't. I didn't understand what Pulmonary Hypertension was, so I blew it off. I actually thought it had something to do with his blood pressure, how wrong I was. Because the finding of mild Pulmonary Hypertension was put on the back burner and the only focus was on his lungs, his condition worsened over the years.

There are no cures for heart failure of Pulmonary Hypertension

We used to see Pulmonary Doctors in Erie, Pa. Since 2012, we've been with a group of Physicians at UPMC- Pittsburgh. It's taken this long to find the proper multidisciplinary team to continue to figure out what is causing the root of my husband's breathing difficulties, along with severe fatigue and a new symptom that reared over the past 6 months or so, fluid retention in upper abdomen and lower lungs. My husband just had another invasive heart procedure done last week and we are still waiting for the results. In the mean time, he's on different medications which allow him to function for part of the day and that's an improvement compared to 6 months ago. So, even though there isn't a cure for either illness, they do have medications to help improve the quality of life of a person suffering from these illnesses. The test he had done last week was for purposes of getting the insurance to approve research medications which are proving to work in people who suffer from Pulmonary Hypertension. It will be another 2-3 weeks before we get the final results of the testing.

This isn't about me

But, it sure does affect a person both, mentally and physically when you are determined to help a loved one. So, I have put myself and my own needs beyond the back burner. I haven't been myself for some time.  I'm just now realizing that if I don't work on me, I won't be of any help to my husband because my mind and body feel that burned out. I lost my mom 2.5 years ago and it wasn't long after she passed that my husband's condition seemed to worsen. I admit, I have a major fear of loss. I'm sure that has added to my mental exhaustion because you can't help but worry about losing another person you love when reality smacks you right in the face.  I do not say this for sympathy, it's just a fact. I decided to go back to counseling recently and I'm hoping to find better coping techniques so I can be 110% present.

My husband seems to be "nesting"

I thought it was my imagination but I found out from a person who he works with that he wanted to be sure all the paperwork was correct so I would be taken care of. Honestly, I know the person meant well but, it broke my heart to hear that. He's also been busy putting in new windows, having our home painted as if he's on the time clock. Again, I was hoping that too, was my imagination but he came into our den the other evening with tears in his eyes telling me that he's doing this for me. My husband went on to say, "I need to get the home updated for you and it's been long over due.. please don't be upset with me that I'm not able to go anywhere because getting the house done is very important to me. He added: But, I promise when I'm done, we will go somewhere together and just relax. We haven't been anywhere together with the exception of the hospital since last October. I just want time with him, it doesn't matter where. I want to see him relax and take his mind off of all this medical shit, if even for a week. For the record, I have not placed any guilt on him with regards to what he's been doing but I do remind him how special it would be to take a small break for his sanity and physical health. I think he's struggling with both, getting things done he's put off and yes, wanting to spend time with me too.

I will continue to support any decision my husband makes, this is his life and he has the right to do what makes him feel at peace even if I think it's causing him more distress.

I've also realized it's important for me not to feel frozen in time because I think that's where I've been over the past year or so. I can't promise I won't retreat again but I'm trying to work on me too, in order to be a positive influence in my husband's life along with not losing the energy I need to keep forging forward. The thought of losing him has made me feel angry lately and that isn't healthy either.  I'm hoping that with new drugs, we will see an improvement and he will be able to do a few things he's not able to anymore. He's not even able to walk in the woods or go hunting anymore, which has been hard on him.  Going out into the woods and hunting was his form of meditation.

I wanted to tag a few of you who've stayed in contact since I haven't written a blog in so long. I want to remind all of you what great friends you've been and how much I appreciate so many of you. I won't tag many, I don't want to overwhelm people.

In the mean time, I may be on again, off again.... and that is because life keeps throwing some major curve balls.  My thanks to my friends Paul Walters, Ken Boddie Ken Boddie Milos Djukic Claire L Cardwell , Debasish Majumder and Milos Djukic for staying in touch. I left many out but not on purpose.

Cheers and I am putting on my positive cap... that's the glory of utilizing a research hospital, we've found very compassionate doctors who have made my husband's health a priority, I will be forever thankful.

Deb Helfrich "He who calls out the stars one by one and knows them by name" ... He is with you Deb~ Somehow I happened upon your post … my heart goes out to you. Then a day later I happened upon an older post by Cyndi Wilkins on The Healing Brain that quoted you: They are thriving because they chose to use their brains for their own best outcomes. They accept the hand life dealt them and continue to play the game with panache and a gratitude for being able to breathe today. However, don't ever under-estimate that this is a daily practice, because guaranteed coming up in the next few days will be something to trigger you out of gratitude and acceptance into whining. That is the human condition. Coincidence? I think not. Your words were prescient. Not sure of how the challenge with your husband’s health has progressed but please know that you are in my prayers. My daily prayer: Thank you God for the gift of life … being able to breathe today… “I have not forgotten you. See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; Your walls are ever before me.” ~ Isaiah 49 In His Light ~ fay

Lisa Gallagher Yes, I've heard testimonies from friends that conditioning helps alot during times like this, that try our strength. And, fear is like a leech the right amount of salt and fire should repel it away from our lives. Take care Lisa girl sending you lots of love and kisses

Hi , so nice to hear from you as well! I really appreciating your affirming thoughts. I agree, thinking positive does help a lot. I must say, when one is the midst of watching someone suffer it can be hard to feel positive because fear can over take. When he's feeling "okay," I really try hard to focus on the positive thoughts, appreciation and so much more... you know, life?! I told him we need to do some conditioning together so we can go on some day trips, it's hard for him to walk any stretch right now because of his condition, so we are both hoping some conditioning with the help of his Dr and a trainer will help! Thanks so much Fatima. :)

Joyce \ud83d\udc1d Bowen Brand Ambassador @ beBee, I am keeping the faith that things will work out in his favor. His test results came back and they are now focusing on a condition called POTS along with his lung disease, lungs keep deteriorating. So, the good news is that the idea of PH and heart Failure on the back burner for now. I'm not sure what to think because since they took him off his diuretics, the fluid has returned and it's worse than it was. Time will tell but he has a great group of Dr's who won't give up. Thanks Joyce for reading this.

I hope your eye is healed now Franci\ud83d\udc1dEugenia Hoffman, beBee Brand Ambassador. I'm so glad to hear you weren't hit by the hurricane. It appears Mexico City will have a lot of work to do and I pray for those who still want it to be their home. It looked like a bomb went off in that town. So very, very sad.

Lisa Gallagher Lisa girl, lovely to hear from you. I've been on and off on bebee too for a various reasons. My heart admires your courage and there hasn't been a day when I haven't smiled at your outlook to life. You are a surfer, I hope you remember when I told you this. You will surf those these stormy waves. I resonate your absence from social media and the need to take time off with your husband. He is going be absolutely fine from the looks of it not from a medical point of view but purely from the passion and love he shows towards you. I pray for his speedy recovery and ask you to only have positive, reaffirming thoughts about this whole ride you are on right now. I have learnt that worrying and self-pitying thoughts only makes things worse during a trial in our life. Accepting the inevitable situation overcomes our fears and worries says Dale Carnegie! "May God grant you the serenity to accept the things you cannot change; the courage to change the things you can; And the wisdom to know the difference strengthening both you and your husbands"loving heart. Sending you lots of love and healing take care :)

Lisa Gallagher Good to know about your affinity with beBee and reverence for fellow bees. Perhaps, sometimes more than the world, one ought to care of near and dear ones because it’s bonded family that gives peace of mind and happiness. Indeed, it’s a great ordeal that you are experiencing, and may the Almighty Lord bless you with courage and strength, and your husband with sound health. Have faith in the Almighty Lord of humanity and He is the Best to cure, and my sincere supplications are unto Him for your husband’s speedy recovery from all ailments.

Wayne Yoshida, I wish I could LOVE your comment. You wrote what I was thinking. It makes him feel normal and I also think it makes him feel really good to know he's doing this for me. I really needed to hear this, you confirmed what I was wondering. When I see it from that perspective, well... I need to just let him go at his own pace and keep pumping his ego without reminding him to take it easy and be careful... he already knows this, right? I'm so sorry your dad had regret , I'm sure he did more than he felt possible and I think many people tend to be hard on themselves when that time is nearing. Thank you for sharing this Wayne and for your insight, that truly helps to understand better.

They did check it at another hospital back in 2011 Claire L Cardwell but the results didn't get transferred until this past year. So, a lot was missed because the other doctor blew it off and we had no clue, so the focus was just on lungs. The good news... they are working hard to get him on the right meds or research drugs they state are working, that gives me hope! Thanks Claire and get your rest as you can! :)

Feral mind or Fearful mind, Ken Boddie lol? Positive thoughts do need to infiltrate my mind... I am seriously working on that, even though there are real worries. I realize there is much we can't control, so I just need that merry go round in my mind to stop ha. I will have to come up with a fun buzz. I've been craving the Ocean again (really bad) - of all days to mention that after the hurricane that just hit Florida but honestly, where it hit... well that's my favorite spot there. I told my husband he may get a call from me one day saying, "Hey, just wanted you to know, I'm hanging out in an ocean front condo in Destin Florida" I'm glad it made him laugh. He also said, soon, we will both hang out on the beach, I'm holding him too it!! :)

Lisa Gallagher - thanks for sharing. Your husband is a good guy, so he really does need your support on the remodeling projects. My dad the exact same thing as he got older. He expressed a lot of regret for not doing a whole list of things for my mother and family members. So, this is an expression of feeling better and getting Things / Promises done. It's therapeutic and will help in him emotionally. But, I agree, it's best to spend time with him and take care of yourself at the same time., Take care, our prayers are with you.

Glad you found some time, young Lisa (ha ha), to let that feral mind munching tom cat out of the bag. Now’s the time to have a short daily ‘walk’ on the bright side, or old hungry tom cat’ll be back in a flash. Why not think of the roses in your life (and we all have them) and try and smell them when you ‘walk’.

What you endure dear Lisa Gallagher reflects your endurance capacity that is beyond imagination. I wish your husband a quick recovery. It is appalling that the early warning of your husband's heart problem was neglected to focus on his lungs. Human errors can be costly. I hope that the clouds shall soon shall soon become rainy of good news.

Hi Pascal Derrien, it's been a joy to follow your Marathon endeavors on FB. For me, FB is easy peasy... I don't have to spend much time there and can keep updated. Good point about humans not being bots. If I had AI capabilities, I'd be wonder woman haha. Life sure can be a roller coaster. Time will tell if we are finally headed down without the twists and turns or still fighting an uphill battle. Thank you for your kind words. Hope this finds you well!!

Thanks for the postcard Lisa Gallagher :-) Its heartwarming and it is also heartbreaking at the same time, some people may have jumped to conclusion hastily but one should always remember that people do what they can not always what they want and we collectively should respect that. Life is a roller coaster and we are not bots. A truly reminder of how humane, vulnerable and strong we all are. not much I can do except maybe sending you good vibes :-)
