What Would Happen If You Were Completely Honest?
Last night I was listening to one of my training audios. The speaker brought up the topic of honesty and how it would apply to my business life. This idea is not from me, yet first came from author James Altuche.
Something I noticed he said was the Internet may have all the information in the world on it, yet it is all the âbrandsâ or "interpretations" of every topic.  So, Imagine Google being a bookstore and a website being a book. You want information on a certain topic and ask the clerk for help.
They say that their store has no content on it at all. But Google is honest about that. âIâm sorry, I canât help you, but here are ten of my competitors who can potentially help you. And, by the way, here are three more of my competitors who might be able to help you but, in full disclosure, they are paying me to tell you this.â And then Google shrugs its shoulders. Thatâs all they can do for you.
The information you find may not be what you want but you will come back to them because they were honest. Google Branded themselves.
Writer James Altucher, who took the total honesty approach, believes the following things happen:
- People will stop speaking to you.
- People might think youâre going to kill yourself (because everything you write will read like a suicide note).
- People will think youâre crazy.
- Youâll frighten people.
- Youâll entertain people.
- People will trust your advice.
- Youâll become free.
From personal experience, I noticed some of these traits, yet not to the point of a suicide note. When I first began to blog, I had no idea what to blog about. If you where to find my first blog, my first articles were all about facts. I stated facts about upcoming movies, and such. Over time, I began to write testimonies and tell the self-building blogs. I noticed that I started to lose views according to Google Analytics.
I had some people say I should write about Dream Building because it might hurt peopleâs feelingâs, yet I was being honest. My goal, overtime, was to set myself apart. I wanted to have a blog that was a positive place a person could learn, and have an opportunity to change their life. Yet, this scared different people just like in this diagram above.
Over time, my traffic grew, and along with returning traffic. So, the people who are the returning traffic either find my blog posts entertaining or the trust my advice. When I saw the traffic increase and become steady, I felt free to write.
It is sometimes harder to be honest with myself than with others. What I mean by this, I sometimes ask myself, âWhy I am doing âsomethingâ?â I then answer the question, and yet I know that I am lying. This is because, I know, at that time itâs an excuse to keep me from doing what every I need to do, to move forward. For example, âWhy am I laying down I now have three hours of free time?â I know I not really tired, my excuse is bigger than my dream at that moment.
Being completely honest in my blogs, doesnât mean that I will share all the details of my life. I also donât give my unasked âopinionsâ or criticism toward toward others. Yet, I feel good to share testimonies and stories of friends.
What about you? Could you become completely honest? What do you think would happen if you did?
People think you have to be dishonest to be successful in business. Dishonest works until it doesnât. But Honesty compounds exponentially.
