Wednesday Words: Anal, Annal, Annual
In a crossword puzzle this morning, I wanted to use annual, but it wouldn’t fit. Then I remembered annal, which fit both the definition and the five letters available.
Best guess is that many writers don’t know the word “annal,” so it’s worth highlighting it here, along with two others you might type in error.
Anal (adj.): of or near the anus; someone who is uptight or controlling
Annal (n .): a record of one year’s achievements (a yearbook)
Annual (adj.): something happening yearly (an annual event); (n.): a plant that lives only one year
Now you may not be familiar with the word "annal," but how about the plural form, "annals," which is more commonly used. It means much the same thing: a collection of works, each of which contains a year's worth of information.
So now you know, right? We writers really need to pay attention to what we write/type; it’s terribly easy to write the wrong word and confuse our reader(s).
Are there other word pairs/triplets that are easily confused? Share them with us, so that we may learn which is which!
And if this post helped you in any way, I hope you’ll find it relevant and/or share it in hives so those members may learn how to use these words too.
Thanks!

Well, Franci\ud83d\udc1dEugenia Hoffman, beBee Brand Ambassador, I had to look it up to be sure I wasn't making something up! The plural "annals" is far more widespread, but annal is definitely a proper word. Gotta love crossword puzzles, right?
