VAT on electricity: we pay 21%

The indirect tax on electricity bills in Spain is currently set at 21%, one of the highest in the European Union. Therefore, the petition calls for a 10% rate in line with other neighbouring countries. For example, VAT on electricity is lower in countries such as Portugal (which cut it from 23% to 6%), Greece (6%), the United Kingdom (5%), Italy (10%), Ireland (13.5%), Luxembourg (8%) and France (5.5%), according to official data from the European Commission.

The Spanish government (supposedly left-wing) does nothing and the only solution they give is to put the washing machine on in the morning.

How much VAT do you pay in the USA? In Canada ? And in Australia ?

The standard VAT rate in Croatia is 25%, among the highest in the EU, and our government is no left-wing. :) But a reduced VAT rate of 13% applies to the supply of electricity and some other products and services (such as tourist services).

From what I read the US does not have a national VAT, however, the US does have a sales tax that varies from state to state.

The US states with the highest sales tax rates are California (7.250%), Mississippi (7.00%), Tennessee (7.00%), Minnesota (6.875%) and Nevada (6.85%). Alaska, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon do not impose on sales taxes in their states and Alabama and New York come in second with the lowest sales tax rates at 4% each.

I am very certain @Jim Murray knows all the details and could rant forever about this subject. Am I right, Jimbo?

In Canada hydro-electricity is different in every province. In Ontario , where I live, it is astronomical. We have so much electricity available that we sell it to the USA, but we pay the highest rates in the country. Sales tax is charged for everything in Ontario at 13%, except groceries. It's not cheap to live here at all. 🙄
