Unproven and Unexplained?

I was working online at the college library and some students were talking about mermaids. There was talk about a camera farther down than a human can swim catching an image of someone with webbed hands, big eyes, and a fish tail. Someone called it a picture of an adapted human. There was more talk in the group about hieroglyphics of people driving them away from the coast and some talk of Atlantis.

One of them said something about the Swedish Government covering up evidence of their existence.

They were really interested in their chat and I guess they thought everyone else was too because they were getting loud. The noise bothered me a little but I was more annoyed that I was trying to actually get something done and had to hear about something that could only be proven by ancient hieroglyphics and stories of Atlantis. I asked myself why would people obsess about something they can’t prove? I realized I had an idea to write about in my blog – so I didn’t say anything to them.

I found two interesting articles online about what modern science can’t prove or explain. One of the things science can’t prove is that someone loves you. Science also can’t prove moral truth or that we all don’t have our brains wired together like the movie “The Matrix.” I guess you just have to take some things on faith. Some of the things science can’t explain are dark matter, cold fusion and ESP. They really exist, but no one can predict or understand how they work.

Nothing is wrong with scientific methods. I think we should all be say thank you to people who work in a science field. They do a lot to improve our lives. There are things science can’t explain. I started thinking about why anyone would talk about adapted humans that live in the water if there’s no way to prove anything about them. I would have asked them but they were gone.

The only thing I could think of is that it’s part of peoples thought process, like a scientific method only a little different. Find out what doesn’t work, so you can think about what might work. Then you can figure out what does work. I’m sure I read this in a book or heard it in a class I took - I just don’t know who I’m quoting. This kind of thinking has helped us do things like go to the moon and now people are planning to go live on Mars.

I can remember watching the Bug’s Bunny/Roadrunner Show when I was a kid. There was a cartoon character named Marvin the Martian. I turn 49 in a few days and realize when my granddaughter is my age she might know a guy from Mars named Marvin! When I was her age Marvin the Martian was a funny cartoon character. When my granddaughter is my age he could be a real man! I can’t help but wonder how much of this will be possible because of people talking about and trying to work out what they can’t prove or explain.
