U.S. First Division Musuem at Cantigny: Part II

K. EN aMy favorite exhibit at the Museum at Cantigny is Tank Park, which surrounds the museum and features tanks from WWI to the present. I'm drawn to it because my father served in the tank corp. during WWII, following Gen. George Patton through Belgium and into Germany. Unfortunately, the M18 tank destroyer he drove is not part of the display.

I did my best to get photos of the vehicles without visitors climbing all over them, but when you get the chance to see them up close, touch them, and jump aboard, even adults become like children. Imagine an entire armored division of these beasts all firing up their engines and rolling out toward the enemy at the same time. It must be an awesome sight and a thunderous sound, eclipsed only by the firing of their powerful guns.

The top photo shows an M46 Patton, named after the famous general. Employed during the Korean War, it's been painted in "Tiger" markings. The markings were used as a psychological ploy based on the Chinese superstition and fear of tigers and dragons.

The photo below, shows a very familiar tank. It's an M1 Abrams, used in Desert Storm. It remains in service today.

In order, below the Abrams, is a WWII-era  M24 Chaffee; a Korean/Vietnam-era M41A3 Walker Bulldog; a Vietnam-era M48 Patton; a Cold War-era M60 Patton; a WWII-era M5 Stuart; a WWI-era M1917; and a Vietnam-era M113 personnel carrier.
