Top College Football Programs in the US

Colleges in United States have been playing organized football for more than 150 years. While the sport started out with a handful of teams, it has grown to a billion dollar industry. There are currently more than 130 college football teams playing at the highest level with hundreds more playing in the lower levels. The goal of every team at the beginning of the season is to bring home a national championship. Some schools have been much more success at this goal than others. These are the four top college football programs over the last 150 years.

Alabama Crimson Tide

When it comes to dominating college football, no one can come close to the Alabama Crimson Tide. The team’s reign at the top of the sport began in 1925 with their first of 15 national championships. Alabama has won championships in seven decades. No other school has been able to sustain greatness for so long. Alabama’s recent stretch of five titles in the last 10 years is the most impressive feat in their rich history.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

The only team that can come close to matching Alabama’s success in the modern era is Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish won their 13 championships over a period of 70 years. The team’s most dominant stretch came in the 1940s when they won four titles in seven years. Notre Dame only blemish on their impressive resume is their lack of a championship since 1988.

USC Trojans

The USC Trojans have never been able to maintain a long stretch of dominance, but they still have nine championship titles over the years. The best stretch in USC history started in 1962 when the Trojans won five titles over a 17-year period. The other four titles were won with back-to-back titles in the 1930s and early 2000s.

Michigan Wolverines

The Michigan Wolverines absolutely controlled college football in the early 20th century. The team won fourth straight titles beginning in 1901. Michigan has not won a national championship since 1997, but they have narrowly missed out on several titles over the last 20 years. In addition to their nine titles, the Wolverines also have more wins and a higher winning percentage than any other school in college football history.
