Things Keep Changing

Things Keep Changing

0639d07c.jpg

I was talking to a friend at the college today who asked me what my major was. I told him I wasn’t trying to get a degree. I would get a couple Computer Tech certificates and leave. He asked me why.

I told him he was in his 20’s and I was almost 50. If we were applying for the same he company, he would be the one to get hired.

He was younger. He’d be able to work more hours a week, and probably for less pay.

Besides that, my work experience is labor. I can’t do the kind of jobs I’ve done for years anymore, but it feels like I have to keep moving and do something.

My best bet would be to find something to specialize in and be a contractor or consultant.

In the blogmutt newsletter I was reading this morning there was an article that was about hiring freelance writers who specialized in certain kinds of writing. Maybe I can get part time jobs writing after a while. Who knows?

One thing I learned having to start over because of the recession and getting my back hurt is there’s no such thing as job security anymore. Everything has changed and it seems like things keep changing.

I told him if I keep moving I know I’ll get somewhere.

Hi Mark Blevins, I think you are making rational choices. Technical certificates can be very valuable if you already have a background/work history too. Many companies do contract for IT personnel. Wishing you good luck, I can relate in a different manner!!
