The truth will make you free

The truth will make you free

There is a common idea that the truth will set you free. This idea is taken from the Bible specifically the book of John chapter 8 verse 32. This idea is interesting, why does the truth set us free? What about truth is freeing?

I have joined in many conversations about truth and even posted a couple of times on that topic, the general result of these conversations is that truth is very elusive. So what is the truth and how does it set us free? To begin the conversation I expect that truth is a firm or confirmable position, condition or fact.

During these discussions about truth I noticed that it was not uncommon for people to reject the idea that truth could exist. Instead of truth the accepted idea was perspective. For example gravity, it has been recorded as existing but since we are unable to observe it for all time past, present and future we are unable to fully confirm gravity as a truth but from our perspective it is reliable.

Without an idea of truth is there then freedom? Or perhaps we should look at freedom first. If we could establish the idea of a truth it would then be a bedrock concept that we could build from. This bedrock would be a safe place to begin creating something solid and permanent. But is that freedom? According to Merriam- Webster freedom is defined as “the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action”. Truth provides a place where I am free from another’s perspective dictating my understanding and there by my choices.

Is that why we are so afraid of truth? Because it makes us sole responsible for the results of our actions? The truth makes us responsible for choosing wisely since we are no longer able to blame another for the results. The truth sets us free but it also gives us all the credit or blame.

This leads us to the final question, what is true? What is this bedrock that permits us to make reliable decisions? The original context of this idea as I mentioned was the book of John where Jesus was talking. He said that truth was His word. Jesus’ point was that only by making choices based on what He said could you make correct decisions. He was of course referring to the need of people to believe that He was the son of God and that He had come to save the world. Contextually He was referring to the future event where by accepting His sacrifice on the cross could they be saved from eternal condemnation.

If indeed what Jesus said was true then we have the freedom to accept or reject His offer of salvation. If we do not believe this statement as truth we are enslaved by someone’s perspective of that event; perhaps even our own. Though if it is true that Jesus never said these words then that too sets us free to ignore the entire conversation.

Truth is vital as truth actually directs freedom. Find truth it matters much more than you might know.

Blessings

Lada you are correct that there are times where the truth does cause us problems but if we are unwilling to promote these truth even to our hurt are we not to some degree creating less freedom? We are adding to the deception surrounding the issue.

Hi Pascal, the idea of ownership as a truth is a new one on me. I will have to think on it. Thank you for adding it to the discussion!

An interesting comment. It appears to be saying that your truth, which you would I presume affirm, would be different from as you describe it a Biblical truth. Both of you would be swearing to something you believed. If it varies then it not a religious reason but a perceptual one you differ. The search for the truth should bring people together not set them

As an atheist I don't do biblical truth however truth (or lack of) seems to be a common ground in human relationships, one of the few unaltered and absolute value where trespassing is seen as a violation of a tacit contract between human beings

When a witness stands up in court with their hand on the Bible, and promise to tell the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth, they are as you say giving their perceived version of the truth. Truth is essentially what you believe to be the fact until someone convinces you otherwise.

I'm sorry for the confusion. I wrote this when I was at the airport as I was returning from a business trip. What I meant was that sometimes the mental truth (which is more rational) and the sentimental truth (which follows its own kind of logic) may be different and not in alignment. Perhaps the actual Truth, a more transcendental concept which according to some philosophers is more of an archetype than anything else, is inaccessible to to common person. We may perceive aspects of it, either through the mind or the intuition, but we may miss the bigger picture. Perhaps why the great masters, such as Christ, talked with parables in order to convey their teachings, while they focused more on personal example, rather than lectures, to propagate these teachings and inspire others to pursue the Truth they were talking about. Cheers

There are situations when telling the truth can get you in more trouble than not, even if it is the right thing to do. But it's a different kind of truth from personified truth you wrote about.

Excellent point. In the discussions I have had both were discussed though the main focus was on ideas or truth of the mind. I find your comment on comparability interesting. A rational truth does not have to be a factual truth? The other comment you made that peeked my interest was that you think of someone does not always impact your love of them. I think I can see your point but if you have a moment could you explain? Thank you!

Perhaps we ought to discern between the truth of the mind (factual, logical, and rational truths which may or may not be compatible with each other) and the truth of the heart. For example, if you love someone, it doesn't matter what you think about them, or what the "facts" point towards, since it's the heart truth that tend to guide your actions. Anyone who has been in love can attest to that. Cheers!
