The fear that turns flesh to stone
The fear that turns flesh to stone
Are you standing alone on the precipice of life? Standing there wondering if the next step will topple you? Are you standing there because you are scared to move, fearing the unknown? Paralyzed by fear of the unknown? Then do I have the product for you! Fear be gone by cooperation unknown.
Obviously, I do not have a product to remedy fear in all its forms, a simple take a pill or say a mantra and poof all fear is gone. Risk is part of life. Risk is part of the very definition of life. (Not if you are a biologist). But the fact is life is full of the unknown and each of us must face those moments when we actually have no idea of what comes next. It is easy at that moment, the moment of choice to freeze. This moment of hesitation does not mean you are a coward but more reasonable or cautious. But the fact remains, life is full of risk. Risk induces fear, and fear causes us to pause and evaluate and upon occasion, freeze.
I would love to say when you hit that point where fear takes control and prevents your thoughts from making sense or your limbs from moving, simply take “fear be gone”. But I can say call me. Not because I have all the answers or even most of the answers but simply because I will listen. I will be an ear to hear and perhaps a voice of reason, though not necessarily of answers.
But here is the rub, most of you don’t know me, don’t have my number, and probably wouldn’t call me if you did. Who can you call? Who do you trust to simply listen? Let me say it a different way, who could call you? For whom would you simply listen? Not judging, not resentful for the time spent, simply willing to be there? Maybe they would be there for you?
The old adage to have the best friends, you must be a best friend, is applicable to this situation as well. Or at least it seems it should apply. While there might not be a product called “fear be gone”. You can be that resource. Especially if you have stood on the precipice of life and have moved forward.
When we are faced with the fear of risk it is nice to have someone to call, a sounding board if you will. Find someone who will listen to you and someday you might have the chance to listen to someone else.
Blessings!

@Ken Boddie, you are of course correct that fear versus risk can be managed and that fear in and of itself is not the danger. But for many those are but words that hold no meaning. As @John Rylance said perhaps those with experience need to offer guidance to those who have as yet learned to bust their fear. “We don't fear the unknown, we just fear what we think we know about the unknown.” That is a statement I will have to ponder.

A wise man once said, @John Rylance and Greg, that there's nothing to fear but life itself … and the dentist … and the boogieman. 🤗

We don't fear the unknown.
We just fear what we think we know about the unknown
This is a quote by someone called Swan Teal.
This is bordering on the convoluted(in)famous unknown unknowns statement.
@Ken Boddie just like dustbusters, filibusters, the range of phobiabusters and so on there is a need perhaps for those experienced in Fearbusting to help the fearful ones.

Who you gonna call? Fearbusters! 🤗
But seriously, Greg, many of us fear the unknown and the risks associated with the various hazards we come across. Few of us realise that risks levels are determined by a combination of probability of occurrence and consequential damage. Fewer realise that we have a choice of controls we can put in place to minimise the risk associated with each hazard, rather than making the ultimate choice of total hazard avoidance. You'll find more on this post I wrote more than a year back.
