Von Neumann published over 150 papers in his life: about 60 in pure mathematics, 60 in applied mathematics, 20 in physics, and the remainder on special mathematical subjects or non-mathematical ones.***[]His last work, an unfinished manuscript written while he was in the hospital, was later published in book form as The Computer and the Brain.

I have stumbled into the work of John von Neumann and the brain.Ā  Math rears its ugly head again.Ā  I am 70 and feel like I cannot become mathematically fluent enough to talk the talk with the time left to me.

In 1981, my brain-damaged 6-year-old was committed to a psychiatric unit as being a danger to himself and others.Ā  It was a unit created for such childrenā€”brain-damaged by their baby shots.Ā I vividly recall having to back off from the idea that the brain was a chemical/electric device because of the look of horror on my sonā€™s social workerā€™s face when I said it.

If it was already being contemplated, why was I the bad guy?Ā  [Was it being contemplated back then?]

I am so kicking myself in the behind for passing up that further education in 1976 to take care of Paul.Ā  Itā€™s even worse that they already knew what had happened to him.Ā  He was violent from the age of at least 2.Ā  They knew and they persecuted the parents.

I can't help but think I should have given up when he was 2 and furthered my education then.Ā  Cold, I knowā€”but the world is much colder than I ever wanted to know.
