The Bug Whisperer

The Bug Whisperer

Dedicated to my friend and 'Mom yet to beBee' ...Deb 🐝 Helfrich...Who takes the ingredients of a good conversation and creates delicious honey;-) You will be a Great mom someday!

Massage therapy and energetic bodywork
for the mind, body and spirit

I'd like to launch this hive with one of my favorite 'daughter' stories that occurred a few years ago when we had a change in plans for our fourth of July celebration as hurricane Arthur barreled up the East coast and cancelled our fireworks display. That was like a Christmas without Santa, and totally unacceptable to my ten year old daughter. She decided that a trip to the movies and a bit of shopping was in order to ease her disappointment. We were all in agreement as a day at the beach had us all wiped out anyway...We would catch the early show, do a bit of shopping on the way out, and be home and in bed by 10:30. It sounded good to me, but as it turned out...it was wishful thinking.

We did manage to make it home a little after 10:00, and my daughter decided to hang out under the front porch light and play with the bugs flying all around it. This was typical of her as she would spend hours out in our garden turning over rocks and bringing her creepy little friends into the house to meet me. Such was her love for them, we called her "The Bug Whisperer." We were certain she would become an entomologist one day.

So I left her to her private conversations with her flying friends and went inside to check email...maybe have a little cocktail before turning in. Within minutes I was jolted from my chair by her blood curdling screams. Our two cats came flying through the living room as if their tails were on fire! My daughter stumbled in after them, arms flailing wildly, looking like she had seen a ghost. Now I have seen her frightened before, but this kid was scared to death. I couldn't get her to tell me what had happened because the poor thing couldn't even breathe.

I went outside to find the sweatshirt she had been wearing thrown across the porch railing. And there it was, sitting on the collar...The biggest, ugliest, nastiest roach you have ever seen! I swear this thing was four inches long, and an inch and a half wide! Had I been wearing that sweatshirt...CARDIAC ARREST! No question!!!

I told my daughter I had found the culprit, but she just kept screaming...."Kill it, kill it, kill it!!!!" Now, this was very uncharacteristic of my bug loving little girl. She has read me the riot act for stepping on ants. But one thing was certain, no one was getting any sleep until this monster was dead.

70f7ca4a.jpgI have spared you the original version of the 'crunched critter!'

...I know how creeped out you get over crawly things;-)

After we had smashed it with a brick, my daughter thought it would be cool to snap a photo of it with her cell phone and send it to all her " followers." Now why a ten year old has followers, I'm not quite sure, but she claims it's because she is "interesting." I can't argue with that.

That's when tragedy struck twice in the same evening...When she reached for her phone, she discovered it had fallen out of her pocket, most likely, at the movie theater. Again with the screaming, " OMG!!!!!!! MY life is on that phone!!!!!" Really???? Folks, she's not even a teenager yet! I don't think I'm gonna make it...

So, you guessed it...Eleven o'clock road trip back to the mall to scour the disgusting movie theater floor. Although, we had to wait for the next show to get out because God forbid we disturb the three patrons in there catching the late show! Fortunately, our patience paid off and we retrieved the phone, sticky and all, to the delight of my tween.

When I was finally able to put her to bed, I heard her whispering a prayer for the bug we had smashed earlier in the evening... "Thank you so much," she said. " If it wasn't for you scaring the crap out of me, and me wanting to take your picture, I wouldn't have known my phone was missing..."

" You saved me," she continued, "and I am gonna give you the best funeral ever!" Well, my heart just about melted in my chest...What did I ever do to deserve such an awesome kid? Oh please, don't everyone jump at once to answer that! And the next day, true to her word, we scraped that disgusting bug from the backside of that brick and gave it the best funeral ever. My daughter played a beautiful rendition of Amazing Grace on her recorder and closed the ceremony with a prayer...." I love you buddy, and I'm so sorry we killed you."

This is her first funeral experience with her favorite fish...Liam;-) The kid is so precious...makes my heart sing!

Later that evening, as I was leaning in to kiss her good night, she wrapped her arms around me and whispered, " Mom, I don't think I want to be an entomologist anymore..."

I guess we did have fireworks after all....

I removed my comment in error to you Ken Boddie...this dang remove button is a pain in the ass! To your comment about the worms,...she never tried to chomp on those...thank God!!! But she did fancy sucking on the little snail shells at the beach when she was a toddler...Needed a 'salt fix' I guess... Bummed me out every time I changed her diaper and found it full of sand;-) LOL!!!

Ewe...Lordy I hope not! If she did, she never told me;-) Geez Ken Boddie...just the thought of that made my stomach turn...It reminded me of when she was a toddler...I took her to the beach quite often to play with the little 'wriggly things' in the tide pools...Her favorite delicacy at the beach was 'snail sucking!' I shit you not (no pun intended)...the kid would pick up those nasty little things and suck on the shells to get a salt fix! Used to bum me out every time I'd change her diaper and find it full of sand;-) LOL!!

Your sink load, Cyndi, puts a whole new perspective on global ‘worming’. I trust your little treasure has never tried to eat these little ‘wrigleys’. They certainly don’t taste like chewing gum. 🤣

You always make me laugh Ken Boddie;-) Thanks for sharing this little gem.. .Did I ever tell you about the time I found a sink full of worms in my bathroom?? My little lady had been playing in the garden and brought them all in the house for a bath because they were all 'dirty'...LOL! Poor worms were not happy about the soap suds;-)

Great story, Cyndi. You certainly have a special little treasure there. I'm guessing that her favourite cartoon character is Bugs Bunny? Have you taken her to Ant-lantic City yet? Incidentally, I'm still feeling a little flush after watching that funeral video. 😂

Cyndi wilkins I absolutely loved (loved, loved) this beautiful story. Your daughter is indeed a precious child with a golden heart. The fact that she gave the roach credit for helping her find that the phone was missing, and went on to give it a nice funeral shows how kind she is. Such compassion for such a little girl. God bless her! P.S. Killing a roach of that size is absolutely acceptable. I would have fainted right there anyways. She is brave, too!

a mother would only wish her kids to better her. No wonder you draw your energy from your daughter. You are a genuine mother and I assure you your daughter draws energy from you as well.

#16 I wish I could say the energy comes from me...when in fact, I believe mine has spawned from her...I was quite a different person before she entered my life...Children change everything...and they teach us everything thing we need to know about ourselves...If we just 'LISTEN.' They are the whispers of angels;-) Interesting how the idea for this hive came from a commented that Lisa Vanderburg's buzz "Introspection"... https://www.bebee.com/producer/@lisa-vanderburg/introspection#c35 Another great tribute to the love we moms have for our children...and dad's too;-)

I often comment about how important it is to teach our children reverence for all of life...when in fact, it we treat THEM as such, they will teach all of us...And believe Deb 🐝 Helfrich...I hear ya on the math...I checked out in the second grade;-)

Gotta tell ya Ali 🐝 Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee...almost TOO passionate! Killing insects is not permitted in my household when she is around...and every time we visit the pool or take a swim at the lake, she will stop whatever she is doing to save any little creature she finds struggling to survive...One absolutely amazing moment I witnessed with her was when she was about six years old...she pulled a dragonfly out of the pool and lovingly dried it's wings by gently blowing on them and whispering..."you'll be okay once I dry your wings...then you can fly away." Now I tell you that dragonfly looked dead to me...and two elderly ladies that had been in the pool said it had been floating around there for quite some time...but the kid didn't give up on it...Just sat there talking to it and tapping it on the head...I swear these two old ladies thought she was bonkers until about 45 minutes into her rescue efforts the wings began to flutter...I kid you not...Five minutes later, it flew away!

Wow Cyndi wilkins You are the best mom ever I knew it the minute we first spoke. This story of your baby girl validates it all. Thank you for sharing this lovely memory with us. My sisters and I get scared to death when we see the creepy thing in our home. We would not enter the house unless we've seen it dead 😂 I remember running in fear and breaking a showcase mirror and injuring my sister in the process. I am not suprised at her ability to thank the creature for letting her know the phone was missing. We have to thank our mothers for our beaty, the kindness within and ofcourse the brains 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗

haha...oh, Lordy - kids! We lived in the land of Buick-sized roaches: Florida. One was in my underwear I'd laid out the night before so I could dress in the dark, not to wake hubby. Pulling up my pants, I must say, was rather...upsetting..? Your daughter has all the paradox and peculiarities necessary to be a fully fledged awesome woman, well done Cyndi wilkins!! I LOVE that she said a prayer of thanks to a nasty-ass bug for helping her find her cell phone.....that's most def a girlie thing! I peed my pants at the fish......sorry, Cyndi-daughter...it was so small, took awhile for my old eyes to see.
