The art of listening - I think I killed it

The art of listening - I think I killed it

a23b5d3b.jpg

Have you ever been guilty of listening to only half of a conversation before judging the entire statement? I have. I have come to my conclusion before they had finished their story or joke or even the point they were trying to make. Why would I do that? Am I so brilliant that I know their point before they have a chance to even pronounce it? Assuming this is a repeated statement, possibly. Can I read their thoughts and attitudes? If they are standing on a soap box, perhaps. But to be honest I have to have made that judgment before they started their speech.

Prejudging someone’s point before they make it is a bad habit that is easy to fall into. This is a habit that creates frustration on both sides of the conversation. We become judge jury and executioner before hearing all and perhaps any of the facts. They get frustrated because they are not able to present their idea, opinion or perspective before they become irrelevant to the conversation.

How many times has the desire to judge the conversation prior to hearing it caused me from learning something new or even recognize that someone has agreed with me? How many times has my desire to jump into the conversation prevented a good idea and hindered growth?

It is said that a wise man listens and considers how to speak while a fool just opens up his mouth.

We will always judge every conversation we are in but perhaps we also could also be wise.

So true, but the main problem I hove found is not the disrespect but the loss of communication and potential gain. Of course the disrespect is a significant problem as well.
