Steady as she goes

According to the Nautical Dictionary “steady as she goes” means to stay on the same heading. So to not change direction would be a decent understanding of that term. In our own lives we often would like to cry out “steady as she goes”, do not change course. But as time goes by that does not always seem to work.

Now it is true not all changes and turns are problems, in fact many are intentional and needed to reach our intended destinations. Issues arise when the turns and changes are not premeditated. When these turns happen after we have asked for a steady course is when we seek solutions to our situation. But where should we look?

If they are financial we are quick to seek out our accountant, even if that is us. If the issue is in our health the doctor is often the first call, or third perhaps fourth. But who do you call when you realize you are not happy? What do you do when you become aware that your life is not what you expected it to be?

We are told to suck it up and find a solution, but for many we have arrived at our steady course, we are where we intended to be, yet we are not happy. We have called out “steady as she goes”, but out destination is not fulfilling. The answer for many is to get a divorce, find a change. For others the answer is to go through what is called a mid life crises. But none of these answer the problem. Divorce only adds stress and issues, a “mid life crisis” is simply a cry for help.

The answer is found in the reality of your destination. The course of our lives is dependent on our destination but for many that destination is not well considered. Wealth is nice but it is not an answer. Family is fantastic but if it is dysfunctional, wow. Have you asked yourself where you are going? What is your destination?

Regardless of your profession: Professional, Pastor, Realtor, Construction worker… Each of us needs to ponder the reality of our destination, think about the end of our journey. Yes some plan on working until they die; others plan on retiring as soon as possible. That is great but then what?

No I am not talking about religion. Religion is often considered a set of rules designed to bring conformity and direction to one’s life. I am addressing the reality that life without relationship with God will not bring peace or contentedness. You do not have to believe me, look around, and do your own research. Just remember this when you realize that everything you have done to direct your life does not result in your looking forward to tomorrow, God is waiting.

Steady as she goes only works when we want to go where we are headed.
