Spiritual Physics-- The Second Half

Spiritual Physics-- The Second Half

Jerry HEIL] \ 3In round two I left off after five chapters of The God Theory.

We got through Fundamental Questions, Creation, Reductionism and Consciousness.

Now comes the hard part.

Once again, I’ll give you the highlighted text from a chapter and then my comment. My intent is to have you walk this path with me seeing the author’s words that struck me as I read them and the reaction I now have after reading to the end of the book.

The Zero Point Field

  • Highlight: “According to the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, at every possible frequency there will always be a tiny bit of electromagnetic jiggling going on. And if you add up all these ceaseless fluctuations, you get a background sea of light whose total energy is enormous. This is the electromagnetic zero-point field.

Zero-Point refers to the fact that even though the extent of this energy is huge, it is the lowest possible energy                      state…Since it is everywhere inside and outside of us, permeating every atom in our bodies, we are effectively blind            to its presence.”

  • Observation: At first I was reminded of a silly cartoon with a scruffy cat running in circles screaming,”It’s everywhere, it’s everywhere!” And then I thought about it. Planck, Einstein, and Heisenberg, all great physicists, had cited it and worked with it in experiments. Go along with it for the moment.

Into the Void

  • Highlight: “After all, God didn’t say, ‘Let there be energy.’ …To put it in somewhat metaphysical terms, there exists a background sea of quantum light (the electromagnetic zero-point field) filling the universe and that light generates a force that opposes acceleration when you push on any material object. The action of that quantum light is what makes matter the seemingly solid, stable stuff of which we and our world are made.”
  • Observation: I’ve always been stymied by the idea that there are huge distances in between the atoms that make up matter and yet you can’t push it around easily. Seems there is a reason why. The author claims that he and others have now proven this contention four different ways including the first which took down a Newtonian postulate!

That is worth paying attention to in my book.

Following the Light

  • Highlight: “This contradiction between the ‘revealed’ or spiritual, and the calculated or scientific optical, properties of the universe suggests that we are on the wrong track. Most scientists would probably attribute the contradiction to the mythical nature of the ancient legend…

On the other hand, perhaps this reference is to an entirely different universal light radiation that does not originate in            the sun, the moon, or the stars but rather in the electromagnetic zero-point field that may be involved in the origin of            the properties of matter in a fundamental way.”

  • Comment: No wonder great physicists sooner or later start asking fundamental questions. Unfortunately most of them have been carefully taught not to explore too far in places that require questioning their scientific religion.

God and the Theory of Everything

  • Highlight: “My theory, in short, proposes that we regard the laws of physics as the manifestation of God’s idea, not the limit of God’s creative potential…In other words, when it comes to creation, ‘top-down’ is revelation, ‘bottom up” is physics—but it’s all the same creation.”
  • Takeaway: A hundred pages in and we get that cogent statement. We had to pass through a great deal of scientific history as well as religious references to see how such a conclusion could be reached. It was worth the trip. But wait, there’s more

An Infinite Number of Universes

  • Highlights: Science denies that there is another world beyond its borders and treats the reports of travelers in that realm as delusions and imaginings. Real discoveries lie ahead if we can learn to integrate the vast physical knowledge accumulated by science over three centuries, with the spiritual awareness embodied in our consciousness.

The physical universe and the beings that inhabit it are the conscious creation of a God whose purpose is to                           experience his own magnificence in the living consciousness of his creation.”

  • Takeaway: Late in his novel Stranger in a Strange Land, Robert Heinlein uses the phrase “Thou art God” as a greeting, a blessing a benediction and a spice. That tracks with the ideas presented here.

A Purposeful Universe

  • Highlight: “In the history of mankind we acknowledge that the aggregate of direct human experience does not within the artificial confines of physical law. There is simply more to reality than physics, something the majority of humanity seems to know intuitively.”
  • Reflection: this book substantiated a great deal of what I believed and gave me solid references for a life that accepts science and spirituality while rejecting organized religions.

How is your intuition?

Yikes! I knew the trend line was bad but this visual puts everything in its place. The question is, why does something of such low interest have such power?
