Sometimes You Need to Hack Your Own Business

Sometimes You Need to Hack Your Own Business

4e3ed29a.jpg

excerpt from my upcoming book, Hacking the Truth...

...All of what that Mission Impossible team is doing, including Ethan Hunt, is Hacking the Truth.

They have a mission. Just like you and your company. There are barriers and bullshit and human firewalls that often hinder, if not slow or stop, your mission statement or expansion.

You can Google “Hack” or check it out in any online forum you like, but it’s just become the “cool” slang to say how you bypass the bullshit and barriers to get a result quicker, faster, and better.

Like Ethan Hunt and the Mission Impossible team.

I’ve been helping businesses for over forty years and some of the “firewalls” the staff and departments put up are not in their computers.

They are the very “firewalls” they build inside themselves because they are afraid to tell management or they will lose their job, or quite frankly they have some kind of long standing feud with the Project Manager because she sucks up to the CEO or something.

Those DNA Design guys back when they were stringing together those beautiful DNA chains didn’t design the firewalls. You did. And yet when they were working on your judgement gene, to be fair, they may have been taking an occasional hit from a joint.

So sometimes humans don’t use good judgment.

Hence friggin’ human firewalls.

And truly, when I interview executives they sometimes wonder why things are not rolling like they should? Like there’s way too much effort. And there is.

When you have someone who knowingly is dogging it with his or her oar in the water, everyone else’s oar-strokes seem that much harder. Of course! That row-guy who is in disagreement pretends to row.

Because he’s in silent protest.

And the fact is, executives became executives because they have the intellect and savvy to sniff that stuff out. But executives have so many decisions to make and departments to supervise, that it’s actually fairly easy for someone who is good at building personal firewalls to bullshit you and keep you out.

So, you gotta hack the truth. You have to bypass those firewalls with your executives and staff. You have to trust your B.S. Detector or whatever you want to call it and use your own savvy which IS your own computer code, and get in there and get the truth.

And...it’s always so amazing to me... even after doing this for four decades, that when I find the truth, the real truth of the situation---people marvel that I found it.

Yet in conversation one or two staff will say “I suspected that was going on.”

Really?

You suspected this??!

Your Spidey Sense went off like a bad fire drill and yet you didn’t act on it? Not even pull Amy aside for some girl-talk or pull Brian aside and say “Hey---let’s go have a beer. I want to talk to you about something.”

Really?

Well, the truth is this is why you need to hack the truth.

Listen: There’s what you know you know.

And there’s what’s you do not know or what is not known.

And what’s not known is in fact often behind a human firewall.

Why do you think Ethan Hunt comes into the grand ball looking like some politician or high-powered statesman and then when he gets past all those laser-fingerprint and optic-eye scans, he peels back his rubbery-molded-human face to reveal his own?

Hacking.

That’s what he needed to do to get to the truth.

And what sits behind these coded human firewalls are the fears, anxieties, disagreements, or differences being harbored by a few in the group. These guys can participate and act like they are with you, but only when they leave the office or after work do they then air out their actual disagreements.

Outside of the work environment, they talk about what’s behind their firewall.

Why do you think it’s called Mission Impossible?

And tell me, how in the world are you supposed to accomplish your goal or mission, if these kinds of people are not being completely forthright?

Well, the easy answer is you will eventually get your ship to shore, but you will be losing water and money along the way and the ROI is never anywhere where it should have been.

And you instinctively know this.

With each post the book is becoming somewhat tantalizing within the issues it faces. Truth is a concept very much on the front page. Dave Worthen is facing this debate head on. Stop by and take a gander.

Hi Jerry Fletcher! Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Yes, the "human firewalls" as I refer to them in my book, have gotten more sophisticated, hence "Hacking The Truth!"

Ah yes. As every CEO knows. Nobody in the organization will tell you the truth. They all tell you what they think you want to hear. Thus the power of top-notch consultants... they speak the truth and build trust.

Brilliant Dave Worthen!!! Cannot wait to have a copy of your book in my hands!! “And tell me, how in the world are you supposed to accomplish your goal or mission, if these kinds of people are not being completely forthright?” That’s a key question! “...what sits behind these coded human firewalls are the fears, anxieties, disagreements, or differences being harbored by a few in the group.
