So you want to be a leader?

So you want to be a leader, excellent! We are in need of strong, solid leaders. People who have a solid sense of where they are heading and the desire to achieve are valuable in any department. But leadership is not only knowing where you are going and a zeal to achieve, it is also being aware of those you are leading and how you are affecting them. A good leader knows that the difference between leading and going for a walk is who is with you. A good leader has a team and great leader develops a great team.

Leadership is not just about leading it is also about following. Every leader is following something. Every leader follows to some degree because we do not know everything and need to continue learning ourselves. We learn from someone we respect or from a source we are intrigued by. Not everything we learn has to be directly related to what we do; in all truth sometimes it is vital to learn something completely out of the context of our work. This “extra learning” helps us grow as people and develop more completely as individuals. A leader who is one dimensional will soon find it hard to lead a team to greater levels simply because their team is out growing them. Besides, being interesting is not just for dates.

Do you want to excel in leadership? Learn to be dependable. Learn to be trustworthy. History is full of leaders who were willing to sacrifice everyone under them to get ahead, not necessarily the best business model.

Blessings
