Signs of Work Burnout: Recognize and Address Professional Exhaustion

Signs of Work Burnout: Recognize and Address Professional Exhaustion

Throughout one's professional career, it's common for individuals to face stressful situations at work, whether justified or not. The burnout syndrome, or worker burnout syndrome, manifests when work pressure or stress reaches excessive levels or persists for too long.

Although mental exhaustion is common, with 71% of knowledge workers experiencing burnout at least once in 2020, project leaders can prevent and reverse this syndrome.

In this article, we will explore the symptoms, causes, and strategies to prevent burnout syndrome in the workplace.

Symptoms and Causes of Burnout Syndrome:

Burnout syndrome not only affects the individual, but it is also considered a psychosocial occupational risk in the Risk Prevention Law in Spain. Detecting and addressing this syndrome is essential to prevent work absenteeism. Some of the symptoms include:

  • Work Dread: Feeling lack of motivation, anxiety about the workday, and viewing weekends as the only escape.
  • Micromanagement and Unhappiness: Experiencing micromanagement and lack of autonomy can lead to misery and a desire for change.
  • Personality Changes: Irritability, anger, and social withdrawal are signs that the job is not suitable.
  • Passion for Other Things: Feeling an unfulfilled passion for other activities may indicate the need to explore new career paths.

Identification and Prevention:

Recognizing the symptoms of burnout syndrome is crucial for timely intervention. Some prevention strategies include:

  • Self-care: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle with regular schedules, moderate exercise, and enjoyable activities outside of work.
  • Adjusting Expectations: Questioning one's own demands, setting boundaries, and managing work time to balance the workload.
  • Assessment Tools: Utilizing tools such as the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) to assess burnout syndrome within the team.

Differences with Stress:

It's essential to distinguish burnout syndrome from stress. While stress in small doses can be beneficial, burnout is harmful. Work exhaustion manifests in mental and physical fatigue, depersonalization, and decreased productivity.

Phases of Burnout Syndrome:

Five phases are identified in the development of burnout syndrome:

  1. Initial Enthusiasm: Excitement at the beginning of a new project.
  2. Stagnation: Doubts about the ability to handle work demands.
  3. Frustration: Onset of the syndrome with feelings of frustration.
  4. Apathy: Lack of meaning in work and decreased interest.
  5. Burnout: Mental and emotional collapse, with possible abandonment of work.

Prevention for Team Leaders:

Leaders play a crucial role in preventing burnout syndrome:

Proactivity: Prevent work overload through planning and resource management. Resource Management Tools: Use tools that provide a comprehensive view of assigned tasks and allow for task redistribution as needed. Individual Meetings: Maintain regular meetings to assess workload and understand team needs.

Prevention for Employees:

For those already experiencing burnout, measures are suggested to reverse the impact and develop resilience:

Scheduled Breaks: Introduce breaks throughout the day to counteract fatigue. Set Boundaries: Establish temporal and physical boundaries to disconnect from work. Take Days Off: Take vacation days to relax and recharge. Self-care: Dedicate time to enjoyable activities, get enough sleep, and take care of mental health.

Relationship between Workload and Work Exhaustion:

Workload, both physical and mental, is linked to work exhaustion. The transition to remote work has affected the comfort of the work environment, contributing to exhaustion. Evaluating workload is essential to address psychosocial risks and prevent burnout syndrome.

Recognizing burnout syndrome as a pervasive reality among workers is crucial. Understanding its symptoms, navigating its phases, and implementing proactive prevention strategies are indispensable for leaders and employees alike. By fostering a culture of proactive management, organizations can significantly impact the well-being of their teams.

If you resonate with these indicators of burnout, it may be an opportune moment to contemplate a shift in your career trajectory. At beBee, we're here to support you on your journey towards a more fulfilling professional path.
