QThey fired me!

The board I had so carefully nurtured told me to be gone by Monday.

It was a long evening and a longer night.

Somewhere in the middle of it I got up and went into the den.

I automatically turned on the desk lamp and opened my attache.

Right about then, the family cat leaped on the desk, sat under the lamp, swished her tail around her and burped me.

I pulled the blue velvet box out of the attache and opened it. As I lifted the string of pearls, one dropped off. bounced on the desk and turned the cat into a hockey player. She chased it out into the hall and I could hear it ricocheting off the walls.

I captured a cat in one hand and the pearl in the other.

Back at the desk, I realized that though I had been cut off from my job, I still had a full string of connections.

I was still memorable to a lot of folks.

I was still a trusted member of the community.

That night, showing folks just like you how to become memorable, get to trust and become unforgettable became my mission.

Let me show you how to become memorable.

When you meet someone for the first time—in person or on-line--- you have 3 seconds to brand yourself.

Three seconds to answer the question, “What do you do?”

Three seconds to become memorable.

You need a hook.

Here’s how to come up with your memorable hook.

1. Start with the generic description of what you do.

Example: I’m a web site developer

2. Use words that touch the senses

Example: I build web sites

3. Incorporate the key benefit you provide.

Example: I build websites that generate business for small companies

4. Shift the language to their words

Example: I build web sites that make rain for small businesses

5. Make it short

Example: I build web sites that make rain

Here are examples of three options to consider from my files:

  • The Unforgettable Title: “I’m the CPA they call Captain Crunch”

  • The Beloved Benefit: “The Defogger” a management consultant who doubled his revenues when he started using it.

  • The Shock Style Connector: A speaker who says, “I take the fear out of queer.”

Not everyone can do this by themselves. If you stumble don’t be afraid to get help.

You don’t need to get fired to get started.

That long night for me was back in 1990.

It took a while but I built a business, a brand and a life of joy.

You, too, can be memorable.

You can get to trust.

And with a little hard work you’ll be unforgettable.

Are you ready?

* A signature story tells" Why" a consultant does what she or he does. It includes an epiphany and provides concrete information that can be used immediately by viewers/listeners. That content is usually just part of what the expert offers. The signature story expands to fill the time available but, like this example, can be spoken in about 3 minutes. I prefer to end on a positive note and with a challenge.

And so it goes

Bill, Careful what you read to a pit bull. She might get ideas that play to her independent streak. You might be licked into submission. Keep smilin' and have a great new year.

Kris, Thanks for the positive feedback. Sound like you've discovered what I call 30-Second Marketing on your own. That pause after the hook and reading the reaction is the key to the power of the process. Let's stay in touch. All the best to you and yours for the holidays and the year ahead.

Lisa, Arggh! What a vision. Don't you just love the English language! Down every sentence lies a booby trap. Don't go there! Any way, all the best for the holidays and the coming year.

Paul, May you keep your tongue firmly implanted in your cheek for the coming year. That won't make it peaceful but could contribute to the prosperity of friendship on BeBee. And so it goes.

Franci, And therein lies a tale. I've been out here solo for coming up on 30 years. Speaking has taken me to three continents. Consulting has brought clients from Asia as well. The one thing that is constant is the power of friendship. This morning I found an e-mail string that had bounced from Madrid to New York to Singapore, to Portland, back to Singapore and finally back to me. It is nice to receive greetings and good wishes from so many friends in one string. And so it goes.

Dr Ali. Christmas morning. First chance I've had to respond. That mission is what keeps me going. Every time a client tells me how their memorable hook and 30-second Marketing have changed their life for the better I stop and take joy in living. Happy holidays and a prosperous new year to you.

Fabulous Jerry Fletcher! Although I have become caught in the cat burping you. The image of you tossed over your mog's shoulder...it a mother-thing :) See..I don't know how you do it - sell yourself (corporate, not in the corporeal sense). If someone asks what I do, I've quite forgotten the answer. Maybe say 'I'm not actually here' which would mean that I never was....there. Enjoyed your buzz!

I believe a crucial part is knowing why others should listen/work with/employ you. Your USP, usually known as your Unique Selling Point. Always ask yourself what can I offer others can't?  Then sell yourself on that basis.

Sage advice, Jerry, but ... A memorable hook, Sure gets people to look, Using words short and sweet, That they’ll hear down the street, But, in my book, the spin, That surely must win, Is make sure you submit, Some humour and wit.
