The Coastal Workforce Development Board is a unique group of private/public community leaders charged with planning and oversight responsibilities for workforce programs and services in the 10-county region. The CWDB brings together leaders from the private sector, public agencies, education, labor and community-based organizations to focus on the regional labor force, regional economy and the local community needs.

Board members are appointed by the local elected officials with a majority of the representation coming from the private sector.

The Board is responsible for creating a 4 year Strategic Plan, implementing and evaluating the regional workforce system and providing over site to achieve the following goals:

  • Enhance program coordination and service delivery of WorkSource Coastal operations
  • Understand the skill needs of the employers in the region, identify gaps between these needs and current workforce, and to work to close these gaps
  • Ensure a qualified workforce is ready, willing and able to meet the needs of the regional business customer
  • Renew partnerships with regional private sector, education, training and community development partners to maximize integration and impact of services and to eliminate gaps and redundancies in regional workforce development efforts
  • Youth have the academic and job readiness skills required by regional employers
  • Employers have the skilled workers they need to remain competitive

Are you a Veteran or an Eligible Spouse of a Veteran?

In accordance with the Jobs for Veterans Act (PL 107-288), WorkSource Coastal offers Priority of Service to veterans and eligible spouses.

A veteran is defined as a person who has served at least one day in the active military, naval, or air service and who was discharged or released from service under any other than a condition classified as dishonorable. This definition includes Reserve units and the National Guard units active for Federal Services.

An eligible spouse is defined as a spouse of a veteran who dies of a service connected disability, a spouse of any member of the Armed Forces service on active duty who, at the time of application for the priority is listed in one or more of the following categories and has been so listed for a total of more than 90 days: missing in action, captured in the line of duty by a hostile force; or forcibly detained or interned in the line of duty by a foreign government or power; a spouse of any veteran who has a total disability resulting from a service-connected disability, as evaluated by the Department of Veteran Affairs; a spouse of any veteran who died while a disability was in existence.

Priority of Service includes:

  • Service by the next available staff member
  • Given first priority to obtaining employment and training services

When entering the Service Center, please assist the staff member greeting you by indicating your status as an eligible veteran or spouse to receive these priorities of service.

WorkSource Coastal provides employment and training services resources for youth, ages 16-24 who are both in and out-of-school.  Our focus is on career and educational development, work readiness training and work experience placements.   The goal is to help young people understand the importance of education and classroom learning.  The youth we support understand the importance of education, but lack resources and face many barriers.  Our services help to connect youth who are in search of identifying a career pathway to academic and/or employment opportunities.

Jobs for Georgia’s Graduates (JGG)

The Out-of-School (OOS) Jobs for Georgia’s Graduates Program operated by the Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) National Network, is designed to serve youth, ages 16-24 that have left the traditional school system and is interested in completing requirements for a high school diploma or attain a GED. The primary mission of this JGG Model program is to recover dropouts and to provide an array of counseling, employability and technical skills development, professional association, job development, and job placement services that will result in either a quality job leading to a career after graduation and/or enrollment in a postsecondary education and training program.

A trained JGG Career Specialist provides counseling and classroom instruction. Participants are also equipped with employability skills in 20 employability competencies that will prepare them for the workplace. These competencies are organized in the following six competency categories: career development, job attainment, job survival, basic skills, leadership and self-development, and personal skills competencies.

YouthBuild Savannah

The YouthBuild Savannah Program is a comprehensive employment and training program that promotes affordable housing in Savannah communities.  Eligible young men and women who have left public or private school without a diploma, ages 16 – 24 years old will spend nine (9) months participating in activities such as: GED Instruction, Construction Training, Leadership Training, Community Involvement and Guidance Counseling Services.

Trainees learn construction trade skills to improve their community by building affordable housing for low-to-moderate income families.  Each trainee receives above minimum wage for their work on the construction site with the possibility of wage increases and bonuses, based on work performance.

YouthBuild Savannah develops young leaders to take responsibility for their families and communities and to change the conditions of poverty through civic engagement.  Trainees spend half of their time in structured rigorous classrooms working toward attaining their high school diploma or GED, mastering construction skills and earning construction-related industry recognized certifications.  All skills learned equips them with the necessary tools to succeed in high-demand careers, enter postsecondary education, registered apprenticeships and/or enter the military.
