Rebounding for Travel

I've been offline more than online recently. My husband and I both ended up coming down with a nasty Respiratory flu which turned into infections for both of us. After 10 days or so we both went to our Doctors. I ended up with an ear infection, sinus and laryngitis. My husband wasn't as lucky, he ended up with pneumonia and had to go back to the Doctor today because his antibiotics didn't work. I'm a wimp when I'm sick... just let me be and I can wimp out on my own. My husband is a bit needier, although anyone that works with him would never know, he saves it all for me when he comes home. I'm not complaining because he does have a lung condition called Sarcoidosis and he's been on immunosuppressant drugs to stop lung scarring. The downside to these drugs, they make him more susceptible to more severe infections. It's been over two weeks and he's still not well. Today the Doctor ran a ton of tests and put him on two antibiotics along with steroids for his breathing. He's a tough cookie though because he's only missed one day or work in the past 15 days, unbelievable. And, I have been trying to pamper him since he's been sicker than me! That's why I've been really quiet and fairly absent over the past 2-3 weeks. When it rains it pours. We both had the stomach flu a week before. We've been lucky though because we haven't been this sick in a long time.

To top it off part of my pain was coming from a tooth. I went to the dentist and found out my wisdom tooth has a cavity so it's getting removed on Tuesday. Ok, I admit, I have extreme dental phobia so I'm really looking forward to having this tooth removed. I think I should have a Mimosa breakfast before I leave, what do you think? The dentist told me it's an uncomplicated removal and it will 'slide right out.' He better not be lying to me or I might have to bite him.

We were supposed to leave for Colorado this week but had to reschedule for the next week so he can get caught up on some last minute things and we are feeling better. We are taking a road trip out there to see our son, daughter in law and grandsons. Long over-do trip. It's been 2 years since we last took a trip out there. We are stopping in Louisville Ky for 2 nights so we can hit the Bourbon trail. I wrote about this a few weeks ago. I'm not a bourbon drinker but I look forward to seeing the sights along the way and eating good food! After Dean Owen shared a blog about Bourbons in Japan, I decided I have to try a few, let's just hope I don't stumble after trying some! We are also stopping in St. Louis for a night but will get there early enough to explore a bit. I can't wait for the drive through Kansas, I think the most exciting part of that drive will be looking for Dorothy and Toto! After watching the weather, we might want to bring our tornado chaser technology with us. Ok, I lied, we don't own any. Hoping to miss any severe storms in the Midwest! Excited to get out to Denver.

Here are a few pics from previous trips which gets me even more excited when I re-visit the photos.

If you've been to Colorado or live there, would love idea's on places/towns that are within an hour and a half from Broomfield that are fun for both adults and children! Maybe John White, MBA may have some ideas? I was looking at Frisco and Dillon Lake.

Just in case Dean Owen - Mucus cleaning and immunity boosting juice 2 cups of daikon radish 2 apples 6 celery stalks 3 inches of ginger root 1 lemon For Turmeric Milk: Make a Paste with water and turmeric on the stove, I add some cinnamon, a pinch of black pepper. Let it cool. Then I use coconut milk, about 1/4 tsp of the paste and some raw honey - heat the milk and stir in the rest. It's not overly tasty. I actually prefer tea with turmeric, honey, lemon, and pinch of pepper.

I think the same flu can mutate and hit each person a bit differently. Sweat it out, I've heard people say that before! My husband tried for 5 days and just became more ill because he was ignoring his chest symptoms (well, he was trying to) Hope you are both better now!

Hmm Ok, I don't think I could do radish juice either, unless there is a great recipe for it? Well... I will never say never when it comes to pain! Buddybee, I like that Praveen Raj Gullepalli :) Thanks for all the tips!

A Turmeric milkshake? Radish juice? (do you mean the big white ones we call Daikon in Japan?) This is all very interesting....

Thanks for all the great advice Praveen Raj Gullepalli! Does pickled garlic have the same effect? Hmm, not sure I could drink garlic water lol. I like the clove suggestion too. I had no idea clove has blood thinning properties. I heard Turmeric also has blood thinning properties along with being a great anti-inflammatory. I made a turmeric paste a few weeks back when I first became ill and I used way too much paste in my turmeric milk. My stomach paid for that one the next day haha. Live and learn, right? I think I could find fun ways to incorporate raw garlic into dishes like rice as you suggested. I'm so used to using powder because it's convenient, must start buying it fresh :)

Todd Jones, I have a friend who LOVES going to the Dentist because of the nitrous! I tried it once and had a panic attack because of the mask. I pulled it off and told them to keep it off of me! It's a shame because I hear it makes you feel loopy and laugh a lot.

Paul Walters know Mandarin? At any rate, you make sure you are ready for this trip so you don't end up with permanent injuries! That is one massive Trip Paul. I can't wait to read your buzzes and see photos. Ask Dr. about blood thinners while flying... I will inbox you if you want to know why I mention this.

Hi Chas ✌️ Wyatt, I actually looked up Breckenridge (the town) but I think your right, unless there is a festival going on it would be a long drive and not a ton to do. It sure looks pretty there though! How cool that you stayed in an old miners cabin, did it have a bed?

Thanks so much Tausif Mundrawala, I'm glad this buzz didn't sound like I was whining. I wanted those who do follow me to know I didn't drop off of beBee since it's not like me to be gone for a length of time and yes, that was the idea to end it with some fun! :)) Photos, memories and just planning takes my mind off of so many worries- unless I think too much about the planning part LOL

Great website for travel Brook Massey, I just posted it on FB and tweeted it. Thanks to your site, I'm adding a stop at the Blufftop Bistro in MO. Looks like a really cool winery and good timing for a stop. We are staying in St.Peter/St. Louis our second night, then heading to Hays, KS (oh yay... fun drive LOL) from St. Louis. Ok, heading back to your site, love the travel tips!

Brook Massey, you've given me a lot of valuable info and I really appreciate it. I was told we'd be about 15-20 mins from downtown depending on traffic. I was ok with that because we got a much better rate on a hotel outside of downtown. We plan to head to Makers Mark anyhow, so we will just enjoy the drive, I guess. I think we will just end our day downtown to enjoy the sites, lights and food :)

Lisa 🐝 Gallagher The Urban Bourban Trail, the part in Louisville, is all downtown near Main and Market Streets. 4th Street intersects these. Your hotel is in suburban Louisville, actually not too far from where I live. You are not really close to downtown, though. It will be about a 15-20 minute drive. You can park and everything will be within reasonable distance. Try one of the garages next to the KFC Yum! Center. The pedestrian bridge over the river, the Belle of Louisville, Museum Row, Louisville Slugger Museum,.. are all within 8 blocks. The rest of the Bourbon Trail, Makers Mark, Jim Beam, etc.. are all within about an hours drive. Near your hotel are two very nice parks to explore. EP Tom Sawyer Park (named after Diane Sawyer's dad) has nice trails with tons of deer in the early morning. Anchorage Park, donated by Papa John, has a 2 two mile trail through woods, prairie grass, and by a lake.

Wow Brook Massey, thanks for all the info! I'm looking forward to the Restaurant Scene in Louisville the most along with just seeing the sites. It appears there is a bridge that you can walk over into Indiana over the Ohio River too? What is the 4th St. District like? We are staying at the Embassy Suites on Campus Dr , Louisville East, hoping it's not too far from the actual Bourbon Trail. I've been to Red Rocks, wouldn't mind going back! I sent my grandkids a gift this year to Ride the Santa Train at Pikes Peak but I'm sure it would be fun to go in the Summer too. I will check out your travel blog, thanks!!

Lisa 🐝 Gallagher I am a resident of Louisville. I do not drink Bourbon, either. Louisville has a wonderful restaurant scene. My personal favorite is Jack Fry's. There are many great restaurants from which to choose, though. I also lived in Colorado Springs for a while. In Colorado, for an indoor activity, you might want to visit the Celestial Seasons Herbal Tea factory in Boulder. It is free. Red Rocks in Denver is beautiful. In Colorado Springs, you have the Pikes Peak Cog Railway, Garden of the Gods, and U.S. Olympic Training Center to see. I have blogs on my website, FamilyTravelEscapades.com, about driving through Middle America and sites to see, as well as things to do in and around Louisville and Colorado. They may be helpful. Have a wonderful vacation!

Thanks Ken Boddie, I need to hear it's painless. I'm such a dental wimp. The good thing about this, I have a tooth that had a root canal done years ago (my front tooth) and it became discolored. It's caused me embarrassment when I smile, so I'm going to have it bonded and I think I will feel much better about my smile again. You mentioned the pocketbook... no kidding, it's SO expensive to have work done. You'd think things would be different by now. Thanks, glad you enjoyed the pics- I love the pic of my son, me and my grandson too! My grandson just turned 6 and it seems like yesterday to me when I look back at that photo! I'm so proud of my son, he's such a hands on dad. He and my grandson just started Judo classes together last night. Ethan was telling me about the first 2 moves he learned, he was so excited and this is good for him: teaching respect along with protecting himself.

I was determined I wasn't going to have any bourbon because I don't drink it but I think Dean convinced me and now you lol. I would have to eat w/it or I'd probably need to just go lay down afterwards ;-) I actually had the dentist order me "you will be super woman' medication haha... I will take it one hour prior to arrival. I'll try to remember than hands on belly. Thanks Deb 🐝 Helfrich! Are you all settled in? I bet the Ocean is beautiful to wake up to each day!!

That's a good question to ask Dean. Maybe they will be kind about it and I will get a great answer! My husband is a Makers Mark Ambassador and before my grandson was born they were told while she was carrying him that he had a heart block of some type and would require a pacemaker after birth. She had to see a Cardiac neonatologist and high risk OB/Gyn her entire pregnancy. My husband and son decided to have a barrel of whiskey done in my grandsons name before birth. Ethan's brew is ready and the block was gone by birth!! So, that brew has extra special meaning to them. Our barrel is ready & he will be getting 2 bottles when we go there :)

Sorry to hear you have both been in the wars, Lisa. But don't be too concerned about the dentist. I have had some massive sculpturing done inside my mouth in past years and all totally painless (apart from the consequent pain in the wallet). But you do realise, don't you, that the post dental effects of wisdom tooth withdrawal result in a sudden urge to imbibe gallons of Bourbon? 🤣 Wonderful pics of those mountains, which indeed appear to be 'Rocky', but my favourite is with the grandchild in Denver. I'll keep a look out for you here in Oz, just in case you get sucked up by a passing tornado. 🌪

Take care of yourself. Need to be strong and hardy for when you hit the bourbon trail and taste all those (Japanese owned) bourbons! :) Actually, it would be great if you could ask the people at Jim Beam or Maker's Mark how things have changed under Japanese ownership. Usually the answer might be negative but I hear that Suntory have been very supportive and let them maintain, to a large part, their independence.
