Proposal for a New College Level Course Entitled “Comparative Racism ”

My name is Larry Fuqua, I have a proposal for a new discipline/course entitled "Comparative Racism ", with emphasis from a majority perspective. I detail "Black Racism " as perceived by the majority population. This course is designed to encourage open dialogue by pointing out the differences as pronounced and perceived by each race. "White Racism ", as we are constantly told by the media and others, unfortunately does exist. However, the White population generally feels, with justification (my experiences and observations), that "Black Racism ", is alive and well today, but, by-in-large goes unchallenged. We often hear that the #1 issue facing us as a nation and people is the question of race, that we need to have a serious conversation about it. I agree. However, many White People feel this conversation is a "one- way street", that their concerns regarding "Black Racism " will continue to be swept under the proverbial rug.

I hope you will give every consideration to include “Comparative Racism” in your approach/classroom in discussing racial matters in today’s America. As I am sure you are quite aware that RACE IN AMERICA TODAY is our Nation’s most pressing internal issue in search of a resolution.

My Thesis Detailing the Need for Establishing a New College Level Accredited Course Entitled “Comparative Racism

 

History is replete with well-established accounts of “White Racism”, slavery, Jim crow, redlining. These are but a few of the racist/racism charges leveled at White People, daily.

However, in the modern-day interactions of the races, primarily between Black and White people, the characterization most widely promoted in today’s discourse by media as seen, received and understood by the majority White people; is processed as unfair, inaccurate, one-sided, and certainly not what many have experienced in their interracial settings in the course of their daily lives.

Many of us, I am A “White Man “believe, no, we know, Black Racism is alive and well today, in many forms, as it was yesterday and will be tomorrow if it continues to go unchallenged, even worse, unacknowledged, as if it doesn’t exist, as some in the Black establishment would have us believe. Un-seemingly, many in the media and academia, sheepishly, swallow this racial propaganda, hook-line-sinker.

Often, we hear that a conversation about race, our nation’s most pressing internal issue is sorely needed. I agree. Black activists readily charge that White People run from having this discussion. This, of course is untrue, and is far from the truth; and that being from the White point of view this conversation would be a “one - way street”, near or total blame/responsibility/guilt residing entirely with the White community, while Black Racism continues to be swept under the proverbial rug.

More recently, the newest charge leveled, “White Privilege” slithers into nearly every sphere of racial grievance advanced today, usually, without rebuttal. As is most often the case, the White hierarchy of media, academia and business, retreats, from this ever- increasing acrimonious barrage without a whimper. White People know why, as well as the Black Activists do, who have cleverly crafted this ‘new ammunition’ of White Racism. Unfortunately, this charge is now prevalent in the Black Population as a whole. Black activists knew this charge would go unexamined, whether substantiated or not, warranted or not, the purpose being of course to gain further concessions and leverage. The goal is to “DARE” any person, organization, public or private, to attempt to explain, justify, or rationalize this phenomenon in any other way, then pure White Racism”. Education, culturalization, acclimatization, graduate and post-graduate level, internships to be damned in many cases. It is rare, very rare that a CEO, chancellor, president, board member, media mogul, stockholder, or politician defend, or pontificate reasonably and factually Black Racism: why so? This, of course is clearly known by the accuser, and feared by the accused. Black Racism clearly awaits any opposition of any form or kind! Racism, White Racism the ultimate charge, the long standing “ace in the hole”.

Do we need to ask the goal of this strategy? Consider: money, donations, board appointments, executive positions, contracts for vendors, advertising, consulting, etc. A more public display is seen daily as exhibited by CNN host Don Lemmon, MSNBC’S Joy Reid, White House correspondent April Ryan, and the View tag team of Goldberg and Sunny Hostin and their free -flowing racial accusations and determinations rarely questioned or contested. They know they are “home free”. Lawsuits, racism allegations, accusations, boycotts are today’s “White Man’s Burden”. Is it, little wonder why corporations, colleges, and universities, etcetera, are reluctant, no fearful, to in any way question the basis of a racial insinuation when directed at them, or against most of the population? The vast number of these cases/charges alleged and unsubstantiated, are proven to be without merit. Sadly, often many corporations and other entities succumb and provide “hush concessions” as have been secured/extorted by such public racial figures as “Rev” Jesse Jackson and “Rev” Al Sharpton.

     

The Individual White Person who dares voice his or her opinion, misgivings, or thoughts concerning racial/racists occurrences, proven or not, but alleged, is in danger of losing their position and quite conceivably be saddled/labeled with the all too familiar moniker ‘Racist’, even worse, ‘White Racist’ (is there any other?). It goes without saying that the end of that person’s career/tenure maybe headed into a doubtful future, if not to an end.

Unfortunately, racial tensions seem to be in an extremely high state of antagonism nearly in every facet of American society today. This is evidenced by the continuing residential segregation, or re-segregation. The church pulpits’ homogeneity displayed in the pews each week illustrates another cautionary indicator of our growing racial isolation. Public school’s segregation is reported to be at the same level as the pre-civil rights era of the 1950/60. This state of racial tensions further exacerbated by such groups as “Black Lives Matters” and “The Knockout” craze perpetuated by gangs of young Black men/boys against unsuspecting innocent White People, man or woman, young or old.

Another craze in social media are calls to gather and converge on shopping malls attacking undeserving White shoppers and of course taking/stealing/shoplifting all the merchandise they can carry. Let us not forget “Rap Music”, and videos calling White People condescending names: honkies, rednecks, crackers, peckerwoods, etcetera. Last, but not least, the fist in the air, which really represents a fist in the White Mans’ face, hats with the letter ‘X’ emblazed announcing their support for Malcolm X and his militancy. Slogans such as “Black is Beautiful “, ‘Sista’, ‘Brotha’, ’Bro’ are in fact racial jargon declaring their solidarity and alliance against “The Man”, conferring to each other their contempt and dislike/hatred for Mr. Charlie, The White Man! This jargon is often used in the presence of White People who generally have no idea of the real meaning of these code words. I could continue in this vein, but, let me end this segment with this recent outrage; our 44th president, Barack Hussein Obama on YouTube recently posted a picture/photo/poster holding a shirt with the inscription “I didn’t choose to be Black, but I got lucky” (words to that affect). This is YOUR former president White Folks, who in your wisdom helped elect him twice. As a White Man, I must admit I am pessimistic regarding the existing racial patterns in place, and those developing in too many venues. I believe if this pattern continues, we, as a country, will not, cannot remain as we are now constituted. There are those of both hues that would like to see the animosity and misunderstanding continue, even escalate, we cannot allow this to happen.

Again, as a “White Man”, I want to imagine a better forecast for race relations, that, can come via our college level experience, through our multiracial, multicultural college education experience promoting tolerance, and diversity. With the existing segregated racial residential patterns culminating in segregated schools at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, this may not be possible. “What do we have to lose”? Sorry to say, sadly, I see no change in this pattern coming anytime soon. Where I can imagine a way to ameliorate this most pressing internal dilemma, is, in- of- itself, a most drastic change that will be severely tested, resisted and denounced as the most dramatic, hateful racist action since slavery. I speak of the most “Sacred Cow” to many in the Black world; the 105 or so, “Historically Black Colleges and Universities”, self- promoting, race specific institutions, using the acronym “HBCU’S” and the slogan “A Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Waste”, jointly promoted by Black Educational Racialists and The United Negro College Fund.    

I feel as a graduate of Chicago State University with BA and MS degrees, more qualified and capable to address the issue of what I consider to be ‘Race Specific Institutions’, the aforementioned intentional self-promoting “HBCU’S”, and their efforts, desires, and determination to remain so. Recently, to justify the continuing use the “HBCU” acronym, they have created an acronym for all other public and private colleges and universities they have classified as “White Schools”, will now be referred to as “Predominantly White Institutions” using the new acronym they have created “PWI”, and the new formal designation “Historically White Colleges and Universities” and the corresponding acronym “HWCU’S”. Discrimination against Hispanics of course cannot be tolerated, so, the new designation “Predominantly Hispanic Institutions” with the accompanying acronym “PHI”. The recent efforts to save the “HBCU” creation, which I am sure is “Historically Hispanic Colleges and Universities” acronym “HHCU’S” must be on the way.

Until recently, I had never heard the acronym “PWI” or “HWCU’S” uttered by any White Person verbally nor written. These acronyms are the sole intentional creation of the Black Higher Education Racialist as one means of directing unwanted attention away from their ‘Race Specific Institutions’, I now apply/create the acronym “RSI”. I refer, as you by now know to them as “Race Specific Colleges and Universities” (RSCU’S).

“HBCU’S” are near sacred in the Black elite education strata, though, not exactly in the same category as Dr. Martin Luther King, President Barack Hussein Obama, Malcolm X or Louis Farrakhan but just below. My thesis may seem harsh and even racial; it is in fact, direct, without fear confronting the REAL facts of the matter from a White perspective and experience over many years. These experiences are personal, intimate, academic, and lived. They may be judged as racial, they are, or racist, they are not. Black People unhindered by “even handed scrutiny”, express their perceived injustices daily with the allied media and others amplifying their assertions, real or racial propaganda. When the same or similar allegations or injustice’s claims are made by a member of the majority, it is met with skepticism, or denounced outright as a fabrication. This, presently, is the way it is. So be it.

My intent is not to eliminate, or bring down ANY educational institution, rather, to see all Americans have an unfettered opportunity to attend ANY college or university, public or private, church affiliated or secular they desire. I attended Chicago State University because it was close, convenient, affordable, and offered my desired major as part of its curriculum, and just as importantly, I wanted to go there. I was not dissuaded by its location, an entirely Black Neighborhood, or, even by its constant self – promotion as a “HBCU”. Nor did I allow the frowns, roll of the eyes, stares or open hostility demonstrated by some students and staff dissuade me. This reaction was not entirely unexpected, or surprising considering my background and life experiences. It was not going to turn me around.

I wholeheartedly believe the continued use and promotion of the acronym HBCU’S is deliberate, intentional, by plan, designed to act as an undeclared roadblock to any White potential students, who also might find a Chicago State University close, convenient, affordable, with desired major, or for any legitimate reason to attend. There is no doubt in my mind, NONE AT ALL, that there is a concentrated effort/desire to repress White Students from even contemplating enrolling; cut the thought off even before it can start. Many of these current “Race Specific Institutions” “RSI’S”, were founded, or assisted in their founding/establishment by White Abolitionists or their religious affiliations and associations.

 A couple of examples are Spelman College with generous support from the Rockefeller Family, Howard University by an act of the US Congress.

Today, many in leadership positions at these institutions, and others, are in an aggressive mode to keep these schools as they currently exist. Consider, what is involved; currently colleges and universities are under pressure and scrutiny (specially so called “PWI’S”) to be more inclusive. REALLY! In this case, as in many others, “Inclusive” really means hire more Black administrators, staff, faculty, increase Black Student Body, increase or initiate Black Studies Programs, provide a Black social infrastructure separated and apart from the general student body. This of course, requires a Black Student Center, a Black Culture Center Facility, Black only dorms, Black only fraternities, and sororities, as well as reexamination of entrance and graduation requirements, sometimes recalculated in a downward trajectory.

Then capitalism appears via the demands to increase contracts/services to Black contractors and vendors. Try to imagine, if the same pressure was applied to “HBCU’S” as is “PWI’S”, and they were required to change their mission statement, outdated and irrelevant today as it may be, as well as their hiring practices, and made a sincere effort to recruit White Students, something until now, they have not demonstrated a plan of substance, or desire to do so; the positive possibilities this could have for the perilous racial status of our society. It is evident everywhere in this racial venue, the open, in your face hypocrisy. It is almost as if White People, even governmental agencies, are ‘DARED’ to try to change or implement racial diversity.

Black Racialist do not want to give up, relinquish, or diminish their hold/control of these “Bastions of Race”. Realize, that so – called “HBCU’S” are far more than just mere institutions of higher learning to the Black entrenched education establishment, Black business interests, and yes, Black Politicians. For many in the administrations, trustee boards, faculties, not only are these positions lucrative and prestigious, but also provide a captured audience/platform for racial propaganda. Many Black Racialist believe these schools are strictly/solely within their purview, their sole right to be race defined as their “Bastion of Race”, and White trespassers are persona-non-grata, stay away, not welcome, nor wanted. The sustained use of and promotion, (under deceitful guise of innocent racial uplift) of the “HBCU” mantra is cleverly designed as “No Trespassing and Stop Signs” to any White Student considering enrollment; close, convenient, affordable, or any other attractive factor be damned.

Today, these institutions are political goldmines for Black Politicians who support them, and “graveyards” for any who do not. Any politician, Black or White, who seeks to make any change in this racial sphere is doomed to the cemetery, politically speaking. Racial diversity on any scale other than athletic needs; golf, soccer, swimming, etcetera to advance/move to a higher NCAA bracket, provide a distinct exception to the near race pure outline. The overriding desire to remain race pure, race specific, regardless of such factors as racial diversity, graduation rates, student/faculty retention rates, budget concerns is a foremost consideration. If you are within, and a subscriber to the race pure, race specific agenda, you will have a safe depository/repository of pro-black-ness, on the other hand, if you contend that race diversity might be a good thing in our ever increasing multi-racial, multi-cultural society, well, the “rathe” may be upon you.

On October 25th, 2018, I accepted an invitation from Rust College, Holly Springs, Mississippi, an HBCU, to participate as a lecturer/debater in their program entitled “The Ida B. Wells/Roy Wilkins Lecture Series”. This event was attended by more than 200 students/faculty/administrators.

 I was received and treated well by the administration and students. The students were orderly during the program and the question-and-answer session that followed. However, three faculty members, attired in African garb, were less than courteous, were racially belligerent.

In conclusion, I want to believe our best hope in reducing racial tension in our country resides with our young college students in the face of our continuing residential, social, church segregation and our apparent determination to re-segregate. Our children are not born racist/racialist, they watch and imitate, listen and implement, all the good and bad things they learn in their first school room, their home, gleaned from their first, and most influential teacher(s), MOM and DAD, immediate and extended family members, and friends. Our young people have demonstrated, when not unduly influenced in a negative way by closed minded adults, that they are open to expand their thinking and minds, willing to accept others unlike themselves. Let us remove the roadblocks, no trespassing and stop signs we have erected to racial diversity through our colleges and universities where tolerance and acceptance must become the cure for a nation in need of a fast - racial cure. 

I am reminded that someone, who I believe to be Dr. King, said ‘We all didn’t come in the same ship, but we are all in the same boat now”. Also, this from Malcolm X “by any means necessary”; We must decide which is best for our families, our country, our peace of mind, I have made my choice, now it is your turn.
