Placing pen to page

Placing pen to page

2537c620.jpg

Remember when writing was placing pen to page where you had the satisfaction of feeling the draw of the pen on the paper? When the act of writing activated the senses and encouraged thought and inspiration?

Well those days appear to be long gone. Now we sit before a screen and type. We hit little buttons and words jump onto the screen like little ants in a row. It is not the same. Yes there is a tactile feeling but hardly slimier to the drag of a good pen on paper. The right weight enhanced by good balance producing a free flowing sentence. Now we adjust keyboards to obtain the rebound we like.

Is it just about change or was there something to holding onto that pen that provided something to writing? Keyboards are great, they are faster and permit quick adjustment of sentences and corrections, and to be honest I have written more words on a keyboard than with a pen, but are they better words?

While some changes are more efficient creating more positives then negatives, we do end up losing some aspects of creativity which could possibly be greater than we might first believe. Now I am not saying we need to get rid of our keyboards and return to pens but I am saying not all changes produce the results we believe they are producing.

We are living in uncertain days which often force us to change, some of these changes will be beneficial and will encourage positive growth for those who are able to enact them correctly. But some of the changes that are being applied have negative effects that have yet to be evaluated.

Be alert to what you are doing so that you can take the best advantage you can during this historical event. A quick mind and a sharp eye can guide you to excellent solutions. Use these days well.

Blessings

It is true that for some the keyboard is king. And while it fits use it well!

It depend! I love to have everything in cloud and have a paperfree world. My compromize is to use a tablet paper using a pen on a electonic device for brainstorming making schemes for my ideas, then blogging and keybord are great and I just have a moleskine for short and very personal reflections to take memories as a diary or reflections to re read after year or to use during travels. Switch contest of writing help you to a work life balance

Pascal are you implying that you are robbing us of the fascinating intuition and ideas floating in your head? Place them on a page, share.

Hi John, I completely understand your point. Keyboards have there place and one of their great advantages is exactly what you pointed out.

Ken, I much prefer to use pen on hard copy when editing myself. Your comment about keeping the best of both is exactly on point! I find that if I am not alert to finding that mix I am prone to extremes.

As someone who has mild dyslexia, I find typing things helps. Particularly word prediction, and the easy of changing mistakes, inserting words I have missed out. I am much more confident in my writing. It helps quickly alter mistakes, as long as I double check before I press the Send button. I still write things down on paper but these are for my eyes only.
This really hit home for me! As much as I enjoy the convenience and speed of keyboard-based writing, I always keep a notepad and pen nearby for all these creative ideas that urge me to put them down in a concrete form. Cheers!

I must admit, Greg Rolfe, that I still use pen on hard copy print-outs to mark up first drafts or when peer reviewing the reports of others. This allows me to slow down and concentrate purely on the change, without being distracted by formatting. For actual writing, however, the efficiency of the keyboard reigns supreme. But extrapolating beyond your cautionary tale of the varying effects of change, I must state that I, like many, hate change, but am paradoxically in the business of selling change. I believe that the most successful changes are when we blend the best of the old and new systems towards a symbiotic solution, much like my mixture of keyboard and pen. Let鈥檚 embrace the new but retain some of the better features of the old. That way we鈥檒l avoid throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
