Personal Branding: Why It Is Important To Develop Competence
Nothing will build your personal brand more than diligent development and promotion of your competence.
Why is personal branding so important these days? With the flood of competitors and talking heads across social media, it is vital that you stand out and rise above the noise.
How Personal Branding Has Changed - Drastically
The internet and social media have redefined what personal branding represents and how it is practiced as an art and process. In my bestselling book, Power Branding Secrets, I dedicate an entire chapter in defining what a brand really represents. As well, I dedicate another chapter detailing the “Branding Triangle.”
There are three vital components within this triangle, which when practiced in unison, builds a powerful brand. A brand which will stand out, separating from and rising above many of those “me too” brands competing for attention and market share.
In short, these three components of a Power Brand are:
- Brand Identity (logo, tagline, jingles, colors, packaging, etc.)
- Branded Communications (brochures, website, blogs, videos, books, etc.)
- Customer Management (customer service, fulfillment, hospitality, online reviews)
All three components are vitally important to build and sustain a well-respected brand, positive word-of-mouth, and clear market distinction.
Competence Is At The Core of Personal Branding
One of the books which had a clear impact on my life was The Way to Happiness. In this book, I learned many simple, yet powerful lessons about life and myself. And one of those lessons was, “Be Competent.”
To become competent, you will need to decide to elevate your life and live like a true professional. Dabblers and bush leaguers never gain prominence, growth, or wealth.
Those who demonstrate competence are respected, admired, talked about, and sought after. Their personal brand generates buzz like no other. Referrals occur consistently and great opportunities “magically” appear.
Competent people attract great opportunities. When a competent professional walks into a room, they possess an aura more attractive than any other human quality. And everyone knows - within milliseconds - that a great one has arrived among them.
These pedigrees not only personify professionalism in everything that they do and touch, but they are committed to observing, learning, and developing their skills. And in today’s world of instant information, it is easier than ever before.
Online courses, eBooks, webinars, Ted talks, YouTube videos, workshops, local libraries, mentors, and so much more, await us all to help us evaluate our skills and game to exciting, unimaginable levels.
Personal Development Is The Secret To Personal Branding
Regardless of your existing skill sets and knowledge, your commitment to eternal learning and training is the key strategy to building your personal brand. Every time you invest in yourself, you increase your personal brand’s equity and longevity.
