It's Not Your Time Yet

It's Not Your Time Yet

When I was 19 years old I went to bed one evening and found myself outside in front of my townhome the next morning. I had no idea how I ended up outside. I was fully dressed, the sun was shining radiantly,  and I could hear the birds chirping near and far.  The sky was a brilliant blue. The air had a scent of lilacs, one of my favorite flowers. I felt such a sense of calm.

Suddenly, I looked up and I saw my father standing about 6 feet away from me. I was awe struck because my father passed away 8 years previously. I didn't feel any fear when I saw him, I just stared at him wondering why we were facing each other in front of my home. I was so excited to see my father and thought maybe the last 8 years were just a bad dream which I finally had awoken from.

Our arms were reaching out towards each other

My father and I were speaking to each other but our mouths weren't moving. I understood every word he said. I remember both of our arms were reaching out towards the other but I wasn't able to run and hug him.

He had a simple message to share

Again without our lips moving, my father spoke to me. He asked me to tell my mom he was at peace. When I tried to run to my father, he said, "It's not your time yet." I asked him what he meant when he told me it wasn't my time yet? He was already gone. I felt a bit sad that I wasn't able to give him one last hug but elated that I saw him and heard his voice again even though we spoke no words to each other. Yes, I was able to hear his voice.

It's not your time yet...

My father's words echoed and confused me. What did he mean it's not my time yet? I'm only 19, I hope it isn't my time yet.

I woke up

I jumped out of bed and ran to the window. The sun was shining and I could still hear the birds chirping. My dad was nowhere to be seen. What just happened?  This did not feel like a dream at all. I saw multi-dimensional colors, smelled the scent of lilacs and I remember how fresh the morning air smelled.  My mother had dreams for years that my dad wasn't at peace but she would never share her entire dream. They were repetitive dreams and seemed to haunt her. I called her later that day to tell her about my 'dream,' and mom cried, then she thanked me for sharing what I did.

It took me years to figure out his message to me

I used to ponder over my encounter with my father and one day it came to me. I realized when he told me it wasn't my time yet, he meant- if I would have been able to reach him and actually touch him,  I might have been leaving this dimension. It wasn't my time to die yet. I just wish he would have shared with me the noble things I needed to accomplish on earth before my time does arrive. All kidding aside, my mom shared with me years later that my message to her on that day about my father being at peace also gave her peace and she never had a bad dream about my father again.

Many of you will probably read this and say, it was only a dream. I dream a lot and I must share, this did not feel like a dream in any sense of the word. I had another dream of him and my grandparents years later. My Aunt had the same exact dream (I let her tell me her dream first), even the scenery was the same. My dad was fishing off a pier and my grandparents were young again, sitting at a table sipping tea on a large outdoor patio overlooking the ocean. I had a feeling by the scenery I saw, they were back in Scotland. My Aunt felt the same, they were back home. My Aunt and I both saw the same colors in our dream too. The patio was white, the restaurant it was attached to was gray and my grandparents were young again. My grandmother was dressed to the nines in a beautiful dress with a lovely hat. My grandfather had his pipe to the side of his mouth with an Ascot cap on. Coincidence? I will leave that up to you, the reader.

Allowed a glimpse?

To this day when I look back on the two dreams I had, I feel as though I was allowed a glimpse into the afterlife. I realize there are those who do not believe in an afterlife, but I can find no other way to explain my experiences. I want to add, I had not been thinking of my father- I was too focused on my boyfriend at the time. I will always treasure these two 'memories' I was left with after my dad's and grandparent's deaths.  Life is a mystery and I always love a good mystery, even if I will never be able to solve it.

Hi Susan Botello, I honestly believe the few dreams (this one in particular) weren't dreams. It's hard to explain but I felt I had some type of out of body experience or was privy to another place that we've never seen and given a glimpse. It's true, who is to say? We just don't know. Thanks for reading and appreciate your comment!!

I loved your post on Lefse and her spirit Aaron Skogen! You are so right, it's very hard to come by. I have shared some of my stories over the years with dreams and other things I've encountered that I've never written about and so many tell me I'm lucky. I feel the same, very lucky. I don't fear death because of these experiences. I fear dying, but I think many do. Ah, love what your sticker says, "To believe is to have faith." Wow- I found that to be profound Aaron! Hey unless you haven't posted in a while, I've been missing your buzzes? Can you tag me if I have missed a few? I love reading what you write. Thanks for reading this and for your wonderful comment!

Lisa Gallagher Whether it's a dream or reality you state it so well: "Life is a mystery and I always love a good mystery, even if I will never be able to solve it." Thank you for the intriguing post Lisa.

Hi Praveen Raj Gullepalli, I can't imagine losing a sibling at such a young age. I'm so glad you experienced the dreams you did. Because I believe there is so much we don't know, I also think it is possible for loved ones to reach out to us in our dreams (but I question if those are really dreams at this point). It's amazing that he was able to tell you that he did not over dose and then you found his pills to prove that point. I'm very happy your dreams continued, it must have given you closure. I often wonder if I never had closure during my teen years when I lost my father because I was only 11 yrs old and we didn't speak of him again after his funeral. I was quite the rebel of a teen and I feel I had closure after that encounter. I don't think I saw it as closure until I grew a bit more mature though. That's funny, he looks like Rick Astley! Oh please, tell me he didn't come back as him LOL!! Actually I was trying to find a photo of him when he was in his 30's. He had a crew cut, weighed 185 lbs, was in very good shape and he was 6 ft. tall, and didn't look like the young boy in that photo anymore. If you are ever up to writing about your milestone, I'd love to read it and please tag me. Thank you so much for sharing your story about your brother!!

Thanks for your comment Harvey Lloyd, yes- those of us that believe in an afterlife do find peace in knowing or at least hoping we will see our loved ones again. I know people who don't believe in an afterlife and they are at peace with that too. I honestly believe I will connect with those I've lost when it's my time to leave. I believe our energy (souls) never die and we travel somewhere unknown. That's just my simple explanation. My idea of somewhere unknown is heaven like. Maybe even an alternate world where everything is good, no one experiences pain (emotional or physical), everyone is happy.. yes a Eutopia. Earth may just be a temporary destination with tests along the way. Of course those are just my opinions. Again, life and death are certainly a mystery.

That's because you are sleep deprived Dean Owen with only 4 hours of sleep. All kidding aside, dreams can be so weird. It's rare I ever remember my dreams. You must have had a lot on your mind and been ready to go when you woke up with your arms out as if you were driving!!

Very interesting Randy Keho, I had no idea a stylus on the stereo could pick up noises and transmit through the speakers. At least you may have found an answer. You're so right, sometimes we find answers, and sometimes we never do. Thanks for sharing your story, I found it interesting!

That's interesting Paul Walters, wow 3 months without touching the ground. There are so many beliefs without evidence, this is one of life's mysteries that will never be solved. Thanks for sharing that Paul!! Interesting.

I don't want people to think I'm nuts but I swear that incident felt so real, I don't believe it was a dream. I've had other experiences before and as of late that I haven't shared, I just think there's so much we don't know and will never be able to prove. All these things, particularly this one, brought me pure peace, thanks Ken Boddie!

The complexity of our existence screams for something more than just biological functions, Lisa Gallagher. Your experience of the past is one that i have heard many express. The odd thing i find about folks who feel we are strictly biological, is that the belief doesn't change who you are and, in most cases improves one's well being. In other words, the belief in an afterlife enhances the living experience. It allows us the freedom to sense our existence as beyond just the physical. Ultimately it allows us to see others on a similar journey and to join them on whatever part we may. I believe you and/or your mother needed what was said/experienced and it was sent. Thanks for sharing you experience.

I suspect we only remember dreams for a few minutes. Once in a while we remember them for a day. And rarely do we remember them for years. I have two dreams I remember for years and years, and both hold significant truths. Then there was a time I woke up in a sitting position on my bed with my arm reaching out in front of me. I was dreaming I was driving my car and adjusting the mirror when I woke :)

I've never experienced anything as profound, but when I was about 10 years old, I heard a voice in my room one night. My parent's were both in the living room, which was beyond hearing distance without shouting. My door was closed and my lights were on. "It'' be okay," the voice said. I heard it very clearly. I was fully awake. I was startled, but not afraid. I wondered about it for years and years. I couldn't explain it. I don't recall what I was thinking about at the time, so I don't know if it was an answer to a question or not. Then, about 15 years later, I was standing in the living room of the apartment I shared with my wife. The apartment was on a busy street and traffic was flowing. All of a sudden, I heard what sounded like a trucker on a citizen's band radio. I couldn't make out what he said, It was only audible for a few seconds. It came from my stereo speakers. It was then that I realized that the stylus on my turntable had picked up the signal. The power was on, but I wasn't listening to anything at the time. I couldn't help but wonder if that hadn't been what happened years before. Sometimes there are explanations and sometimes there aren't.

Lisa Gallagher Living in Bali death is kind of revered as the overwhelming belief is reincarnation . When the body is cremated the soul is 'set free' to inhabit a new born. This is why new born babies here are treated as Gods and their feet do not touch the ground for three months when they become human. Great piece again lisa

Some things our 'Western' culture won't allow us to accept without a scientific explanation. I am not the one to advise, Lisa, but I wouldn't let an explanation get in the way of your acceptance and the peace it obviously brings.
