Is drive the real superpower?

Is drive the real superpower?

On the way home from school my son asked me a hypothetical question regarding superpowers. And while we were discussing his thoughts I began to wonder if indeed perhaps there were real aspects to superpowers and our current reality. Now I was not thinking about the men and women who lift amazing amounts of weight or eat vast quantiles of food, I was thinking about those men and women who were able to accomplish more than what was expected or even considered possible.

Men and women who stand head and shoulders above everyone else. The pioneers of science and medicine. The artisans who create works of art that capture the imagination and cause us to truly ponder or fully enrapture us for a time. What enables them to extend so far past the rest of us? What is their superpower?

Thinking about the advances in science and medicine I at first considered IQ. But had to come to recognize that while each of them did indeed have an IQ that was higher than average, they actually were not actually at the top. This means that while they were smarter than the average bear, they were not the smartest person of their acquaintance. So why did they so far outstrip those of higher IQ if indeed IQ was the enabling factor?

I came to a realization after a time of pondering that while IQ was a valid addition to the superpower it was not the actual key ingredient. Drive or the passion to accomplish was. Each of the men and women who have excelled far beyond their peers had the drive to see and understand, they had a want to accomplish. In short, they pushed themselves. They were willing to fail if it helped them succeed. They were never content to just pass, they needed to excel.

Drive is the key piece of the puzzle for greatness. That one aspect that makes someone push past adequate and reach for amazing. Or perhaps even more accurate, it is the internal need to see what is beyond the next hill. Drive does not settle for good enough but reaches for the stars.

So, the obvious question is can anyone have this superpower or must it be injected like the serum in Captain America? Is it possible for the average person to have the drive and reach for greatness in their personal lives? Is drive something that can be awakened, or must it have always been present?

I have seen a receptionist carry on three conversations simultaneously and still accurately direct me to my meeting. What permitted such an amazing display of skill if not a drive to be the best receptionist she could be?

Can drive be learned? Can anyone become one of the greats? Is it simply a matter of choice?

If it is simply a matter of choice, what will we choose?

@Ken Boddie Your reference to the age-old nature versus nurture discussion is apropos.  And @Pascal Derrien reference to intelligence and education is on point.  Drive is something other, that personal need to continue. But where does it originate is the real question.  The ability to recognize a spark and then the ability to see it through to the manifestation of that spark.  That is what I find breathtaking.  Blessings!

It’s interesting, Greg, to think about what ‘drives’ or, I prefer, ‘motivates’ people … the carrot, or the stick, or a bit of both. I believe that the right circumstances at the right time can motivate anyone into action. What separates, however, your super heroes from the common crowd is that they have learned or developed, perhaps at a tender age, the capability to keep going when up to the armpits in shit and crocodiles. It’s not the failing and falling over that defines character, but the ability to keep getting up and having another go. There’s much to be said for the “she’ll be right” attitude and “let’s have a go”, but it takes a special person with a special attitude to keep going when everyone else is telling you it can’t be done. Are we born with this stubborn refusal to give up or do life’s experiences mould us into a reactive “do or die” disposition? Are we a product of our environmental or can we break out of the mould that others put us in?  Damned if I know, but surely the worst thing we can say is “if only …”
