TOMORROW

I’ve been making an effort to write something a couple times a week. Eventually it’s going to be every day, I hope. The truth is not much happens that’s interesting. Maybe the day to day stuff is something to write about.

Well last week a guy was talking about a trip he’s taking to Canada. He has to wait for a new driver’s license with a travel sticker. It’s cheaper than getting a passport.

He’s talked to me a few times in passing like a lot of people do. I really don’t say much, my grandpa taught me talk is cheap when I was a kid. That was something that stuck with me, don’t say much. But some people seem to have a lot to say to me, so I just listen.

Sometimes people I’ve only kind of known for a few weeks start talking to me about their personal and family business. That surprises me. Every now and then someone gets angry because I don’t share my life story with them.

Since I was taught to talk if I have something to say, maybe I don’t know how to make small talk. It seems strange to me someone I barely know would tell be their personal or family business. My life isn’t that interesting. I don’t know why someone would want to hear my life story. Maybe so they can have something to talk about?

What I really don’t understand is when people tell me I’m never going to have any friends because of my attitude. They’re the ones who involved themselves with me then told me everything about their personal business. I don’t get them.

I used to tell them that, but they would get angry with me. Now I just listen to them until they get tired of talking. That seems to work most of the time.

INFORMATION

A few days ago I was sitting around the lobby of the building I stay at. It was morning and I was drinking some coffee when an old tramp came to the door. He had a medical bracelet on his wrist so had recently stayed in a hospital.

The man was rambling on about things that didn’t make any sense. He was probably on some strong meds. When I walked away and sat down just out of his sight he must have realized he was being ignored because he started banging on the glass door.

A guy who works there asked what’s all this racket about? I just pointed to the door. When he opened the door to tell him he had to leave it smelled like something had died.

I lost everything in 2009 when the recession hit. I’d seen guys who were trying to get back on their feet let themselves go like the one standing in front of me. They would apply for county programs and do day labor. Then they would hang out in parks after work and wait for people to leave so they could sleep there.

While they were waiting they would drink a couple beers since they were sore from working. Then winos and drug addicts would talk to them and they would make friends with them and turn into crackheads. It was only a matter of time before these poor bastards got knifed for owing one of them less than five dollars.

The ones who survived the trip to the hospital were hooked on street drugs and oxycodone and were never the same.

I was about to call the police on my cell when I realized it’s almost August this old guy wanted to go to jail before it starts getting cold so he’d have somewhere warm to stay for the winter. I told this to the guy who was working on staff.

He yelled at the guy through the glass to go to a store and steal something in front of people who work there. The cops would come pick him up and give him three hots and a cot. He didn’t have to go around breaking people’s windows.

He moved on after a few minutes. Even though we felt sorry for him, there’s nothing you can do for someone that far gone. They’ve got to find the drive to start getting help to get out of their situation.

I’ve heard several times – God helps those who help themselves.
