If You Think Your Writing Sucks, Are You Alone?
The online course I’m taking to help improve my writing has a section on making your headlines stand out. It uses an old cartoon of metaphor of an angel sitting on your shoulder saying, “Go ahead and hit the publish button, this article is great!” On your other shoulder there’s a devil whispering in your ear, “Don’t publish this, you’ll be ruined!”
I really don’t like the idea of standing out at anything. Why, well anyone who’s worked on a construction site knows: A nail that sticks out gets hammered. Since I’m not working construction sites anymore because of my injuries, it’s probably a good thing to learn how to stand out a little. At least in my writing.
If you think you don’t do something well, you’ll probably try to improve. That puts you a couple steps ahead of someone who thinks they’re good at something and isn’t. I’m new at blogging and know improving my writing will help me even if nobody likes what I publish online.
If you suck at something, it’s okay. You can take steps to improve if it’s something you like to do, or you’ll probably find something you like doing.
