When youâre the owner and CEO of your own company, you end up wearing a lot of hats â especially in the beginning when youâre just getting your business off the ground. Youâre the marketing manager, ideas person, accountant, payroll administrator, office manager and sometimes even the custodian!
Bikini Luxe has grown in leaps and bounds since I founded the company, and while now Iâve got staff to share the joy ( and the workload ), Iâm still as busy as ever. Many people have asked me how Iâve done it â and my answer is this: even though I work hard, I also work smart.
Here are 8 essential ways Iâve learned to work smarter, not harder
Look After Your Health First
Itâs easy to neglect your sleep, especially when you have a million things on the go. But skimping on your health â getting enough rest, eating right, and exercising â is not the way to go. Sooner or later, somethingâs got to give, and when you donât take care of yourself, youâre not going to be able to work optimally.
Learn To Say No
You pride yourself on being a nice girl (or guy) and you hate to tell people no. But for the sake of your health and your sanity, you have to. Telling people no will not offend them â rather, if you explain that youâve got other priorities to take care first, those who matter will respect you for it.
This is possibly the most important tip to avoid burnout and stay ahead of the curve
Learn To Delegate
As much as you like to do everything yourself, and have your hands in everything, part of being a successful leader is training others to do the work â and then actually trusting them to do it. Successful leaders donât do it all on their own. You have to build a good team that you can trust.
Stick With One Task At A Time
Ask time management experts and they will tell you that multi-tasking is not effective. Make it a habit to stick with one thing at a time. Finish that task and move onto the next. That way, you are able to give that project 100 percent â and likely do a whole lot better.
Move Around And Let Your Brain Recover
Rather than sitting and pulling all-nighters to meet deadlines, make sure you are giving yourself a breather from your work. Yes, you have lots to do â but you will be far more effective if you let your brain have a rest regularly. Whether thatâs every two minutes every 45 minutes, or five minutes every two hours, it will do wonders for your creativity and your sharpness.
Create Habits
Working in the same space everyday with the same routine will allow your brain to function optimally. Youâll be used to your surroundings. Your body will be used to the space, the tools, the habitual cup of Earl Grey tea â so with those things under control, youâll be freed up to focus on the task at hand.
"Good habits are worth being fanatical about." - Â John Irving
Give Yourself A Deadline
Work expands to fill the time available, so be sure to give yourself a deadline for everything you need to do. Youâll find yourself working to meet this imaginary deadline.
"Success is simple. Do what's right, the right way, at the right time." - Â Arnold H. Glasow
Donât Wait For The Perfect Time To Start A Project
You will never have a big block of time, so use smaller chunks of time to chip away at larger projects. Even a few minutes here and there can be used to answer a long dreaded email , make a phone call, or to get the ball rolling.

#13 Thank you Maja, It was a long day at the office! I have been coming "home" from work and then spending time on Bebee to learn more about it. The community here is booming and it seems for very good reason. đ I think the very core of being an entrepreneur is having confidence in ones self. Being able to turn away criticism, and ignoring all the people that tell you what you are doing is wrong and truly believing in yourself.
Thank you Lisa, this is by far one of the most difficult things I have had to learn. To not micro manage everybody and everything! Very difficult to let go sometimes but also very rewarding in terms of being able to be free to do more!
