How to Stay Motivated to Go to the Gym
Let’s face it: It isn’t always easy to find the motivation to get to the gym. While many understand the benefits of exercising regularly, such as improved heart health, weight loss, and decreased stress levels, it can be a challenge getting into a routine. Whether you are just starting your fitness journey or are picking back up after a hiatus, the following tips will help you stay motivated to go to the gym.
Do what you enjoy
You are more likely to continue exercising if you enjoy what you are doing. Fitness can be fun if you spend time trying different classes or exercises to determine what you enjoy the most. There are plenty of different gyms to choose from that will offer personal training, weightlifting, or group classes to meet their customer’s needs.
Dress for success
One way to find motivation is to simply get dressed for a workout. Studies show that our brain recognizes different clothing as a signal for a specific task. Next time you are struggling to get to the gym, put on your sneakers, and dress for the part for a better chance of making it out.
Go with a friend
Finding a gym buddy is a great way to hold yourself accountable. Not only will you have someone else depending on your commitment, but you will have someone there to push you to do your best. Going to workout with someone you know can also ease your nerves and make you feel more comfortable.
Make a plan and set achievable goals
It is fine to wait and figure out what you’ll do once you get to the gym. However, setting a plan is another great way to hold yourself accountable. If you continue to wander around the gym, it may be difficult to maintain progress. Make a weekly schedule of your exercises and stick to it. It is also important to set achievable goals that are not overly ambitious. Track your progress to see how your hard work pays off.
Reward yourself
Not all of us find it easy or enjoyable to exercise regularly. Rewarding yourself for accomplishing goals along the way is a great way to positively reinforce why you are doing what you are doing. Whether it be a night off or a sweet indulgence, positively rewarding yourself can help make your workout routine a habit.
