Got to Adapt to a Different Kind of Work

Got to Adapt to a Different Kind of Work

It’s been a few days since I wrote anything to blog about. I’ve been working at the stadium in the kitchens and had an interview. Hopefully I’ll be working a steady job soon instead of day labor. Work is steady where I’m at, but it’s all temporary assignments.

My birthday was this month. Some family called me to say happy birthday. It was good to hear from them. I realized when the day mailbox was full of bills it was pretty much going to be the same as any other day.

I took a week off work at the temp service. Got family stuff going on. One of the guys at the stadium keeps saying they’re “like a family” there. That’s kind of strange to me. I’ve never worked at a job where people adopted you. When I got hurt on a fishing boat I realized how different the workplace was when the job didn’t require a lot of heavy lifting.

The guys on the fishing boats and construction sites don’t say much. Every now and then you hear someone yell, “Hey asshole hurry up!” and hope they’re not talking to you. Sometimes there’s talk of specialized tools to make the work go faster. They also talk about how they’re going to get the plumbing, sheet metal and electrical wiring all in the same space. The guys might even talk about the next job-or if you’re on a boat-fishing season.

Nobody cared about what else you did as long as the work got done. There was no company culture. You either made friends with them or you didn’t. It’s been hard for me to adjust to people I don’t know expecting me to think of them as family. Then if I do, what’s next? Are my supervisors going to expect me to think of them as my parents?

There’s people trying to be my “mentors” and I really want to tell them to mind their own business and shove off. Maybe that’s why I’m working temp jobs and looking for contract work. If I find some niche where I fit in I should be okay.

Been looking into working as a freelance writer. People in the writing groups in Linkedin have been giving me advice about how to get started. Thanks for all the help everyone. They’ve been mostly telling me about starting out as a ghostwriter.

At first I wasn’t going to look much further even though it sounds interesting. Why  don’t people want to use their own words if they have a story to tell or have something to say? Then I thought to myself, “A job’s a job"

Mark, Funny thing about the new age corporate job market. They pretty much won't hire you if you don't think like they do unless they believe you can be trained to parrot them.
