Get Out of Your Office!

Get Out of Your Office!

A Personal Note
Jerry Fletcher

Dr. Lin did his under 40 scowl and Dutch Uncle demeanor and said, “You need to get out of the office.”

I nodded and he said, “I don’t mean go out to dinner or some sort of entertainment. You need to go get some exercise daily and lose some weight. Otherwise it is a coin flip if you’ll still be alive in a couple years!”

That opening got my attention. I love crafting a unique Trust-based Brand for an independent professional, one that will help them build a business, a career and a life of joy. That puts me in my office in a chair, not being active. But that schedule, if continued, will take years off my life he explained.

He pulled a chart on me.

I replied that I had upped my walking to all I could do with one shot knee and that I had already booked passage to Spain in the spring and intended to take in the sights walking as much as I could but also taking advantage of Segway tours.

That’s when he pulled a chart on me. (I’m not sure but I think he had read my November 10 blog titled See It My Way.) The chart was my weight over the years he has been my primary physician. The saw tooth shape led inexorably upward.

Then came the Coup de grace: “I will not refer you for knee surgery to save you the pain of being laughed out of the room. No respectable surgeon would consider knee replacement with the weight the device would have to carry.”

Break a sweat a day.

We agreed that I would have to take better charge of my health and that it had to come before working with clients. I will have to shift my priorities. My days will no longer be devoted just to clients. Yes, I’ll continue doing client work and speaking professionally but at least half my day will be devoted to building this tired old body back to a semblance of what it once was.

I was reminded of a friend in his 80’s who made it a point to match his golf score to his age or best it once a year at least. He told me, more than once, that the secret to a long healthy life was to, “Break a sweat a day.” That is my new mantra.

Through a mirror, darkly.

The task we set was to lose thirty pounds in three months. That task sounded formidable to me. I had this confrontation with a mirror when I got home and it wasn’t pretty. My width is well over half my height. I can visualize when it was half and the condition I was in at that time was balanced and active.

That was before being diagnosed with Cancer which was taken care of with surgery. Coming out of that surgery was when my body started shifting, from a combination of Diabetes, previously undiagnosed and not really understanding how that disease can warp you if you don’t religiously monitor your exercise and diet.

The mirror told me I would have to do a great deal more than cut down food intake. I could see that there was a need to put muscle in place of fat.

Meanwhile back in the Silver Sneakers gym

So I went back to the gym where I had a membership courtesy of my health insurance. The program is called Silver Sneakers.

I explained I had not been in for quite a while due to business and not taking care of myself and that I was not sure my membership was valid.

I’m still a member. Monday afternoon I’ll meet with one of the personal trainers to work out a program to lose 30 pounds in three months. They believe it is possible. I need to know what it is going to take. I’ve already concluded that I’m all in.

I’m all in.

That level of commitment is the only sane way to mold this remnant of physical condition I once enjoyed into one I can be proud of now. I’ve spent most of my life avoiding physical exercise. I became deskbound in my late thirties. I don’t believe I can completely reverse the abuse of the last 40 years but I’m going to give it my best shot.

If my posts get a little testy, chalk it up to being hungry, tired succeeding.

And, so it goes.

Randall, first meeting with trainer. Yes, I hurt in places I didn't know I had. I think there was a song with the lyric. "Only the beginning..."

It's never too late Jerry Fletcher and once into the routine, (yes that's the key), you'll be wondering why you didn't get into it sooner. Mark my words. Good job buddy, hang in there. one day at a time

Bill, thanks for taking the time to recommend a possible workout solution. And for the story. I'm starting late, I know, but success like yours helps me believe it is possible. For me, the gym will probably be the best solution as I moved into a condo where I have under 800 square feet!

Dr. Ali, Unfortunately I've been too busy to take care of my most precious resource. That changes today.

Don’t know about you, Jerry, but I need to have a well defined goal before I can lose weight. Currently I’m aiming for the Nobelly Prize. 🤣😂🤣

Thank you for reminding us of the basics of good living, Jerry. We tend to neglect the basics.
