TOO FAST

I was talking to a lady this morning at the bus stop downtown. She had some college books. She told me she was a medical student. It would take a year and a half to get her degree. She asked me what classes I had. I told her that I got back from my road trip a week after classes started. Since I was taking pre-calculus and a computer class, I just decided to sit the semester out. I didn’t want to play catch-up and try to learn at the same time.

She asked me what my major was. I told her I was going to get a couple programming certifications. I didn’t think getting a degree was the right move for me. She gave me a puzzled look.

Since I didn’t want to get into a debate with her, I said “Don’t try to do what I do. Do what you want” I’ve told a few students they were my sons and daughter’s age and the job market would be different for me. I just didn’t want to give the same speech.

I also don’t want a college student changing their plans because they see me doing something different. Things have changed a lot since I got out of high school. It’s almost a different world now and I don’t think I should give out any advice. They might need a degree to get ahead. I’m starting over, they’re just starting out on their own.
