Do You Really Have Something To Say?

Do You Really Have Something To Say?

Sometimes
you have to keep your
good news to yourself.
Everybody is not
genuinely happy
for you.

I've been writing about the information you can find online. First there was a post about fake news. Then I wrote an article about people trying to keep from being censored online called No Safe Places. We live in what people call the Information Age. You can get just about any kind of information you need online and even re-post it. But I wonder if there is such a thing as too much information.

I came across a book that is about behavior. I don't remember the title but in it there was a make believe conversation with Galileo and a Monk.

After Galileo stops speaking the monk replies:

I come from a small farming community where people tend orchards and take pride that they feed people and consider their jobs important. How will it help them to find out they live on a rock in and spinning endlessly around the sun? Don't you think some of them will be in shock?

Galileo asks if the monk thinks he should lie to them. The monk responds:

Better to stay silent and keep this knowledge to ourselves so that less fortunate souls aren't troubled.

Maybe the monk has a point.

If you know more about a subject than someone and you have a disagreement, why tell them their wrong if the knowledge won't help them. I think sometimes it's better to let people figure things out for themselves. I mean most of life isn't rocket science. Unless they're doing something like building a space shuttle why not let them live and learn? If it won't help, why keep talking?

Why throw a log on a fire?

I try to be a nice
person, but sometimes
my mouth doesn't
cooperate.

What if the people you're talking to know you know more than them and are milking you for information? You might find out the guys who were playing dumb are your competitors.

Ooopps!  Now It's Your Turn To Live And Learn.

Hey I'm not against free speech or think censorship is a good thing , I'm just writing my thoughts about a clip I read.

We live in a time people call the Information Age. You can find just find information on just about any subject just by surfing the web. You don't have to go very far to find trash talking and gossip if that's what you're looking for.

The most recent subject of garbage on the internet is about a certain president I don't think it's necessary to name. I've written about him a few times in by blog posts. I'm not sure how things are going to turn out for him. Some people like him, a lot of people don't.

I read somewhere if someone doesn't like you and they follow you anyways, you have a fan!

Maybe before you put something out on the internet or say what's on your mind you should know what you're talking about.  It might be a good idea to not just re-posting an article you thought had some cool graphics or repeating something you heard someone say.  That can save you from people saying you act like a parrot.

It might be less trouble to let people figure things out for themselves than trying to teach it to them. How many people really like to be told they're wrong?

If you do have some kind of specialized knowledge before you share it I think it's a good idea to ask yourself if speaking up will help the situation.

I read somewhere it's better to be kind than right.

Thanks for the feedback. It's always nice to know people are actually reading what I write. I read somewhere the average person is exposed to the equivalent of 2 billion bits of information each day and we can only process a few thousand. No one really starts from scratch. What we pick out of all that intel. to process depends on how we think.
Thanks for sharing!

Mark, Nice to see someone pondering this question. As Harvey says, the real problem is in determining what is fact and what is opinion. Agent Orange, that president you don't name seems to believe that whatever he says is fact even though he can't substantiate it. And so it goes.

Mark i think you are right in your comments of allowing others to learn on their own. I would only add one caveat. The resources one has outside of trial and error is media in general. 50 years ago i am sure there was some bias but flash forward and bias is everywhere. Inflated by dramatic straw man arguments. So how does one find the resources when faced with learning? Is a source valid or so biased opinions out weigh facts? This poses huge issues for folks who seek to grow wise in their journey of success. Its very hard to parse data presented by media when you are starting from scratch. With out the history and understanding of historical experiments you are left with following an opinion and not your own judgement.

This is a good post Mark Blevins. People are jealous, sometimes envious and hate to be told they are wrong.I enjoyed your post and so I am sharing it.
