College's Offer Gender-Nuetral Housing, Accept "Other Gender Identity"

SbeBee

This is one of the dozens of vintage magazines I discovered in my parent's attic and it motivated me to conduct some further research.
Since this once-shocking cover shot appeared in Life Magazine in 1970, 90 percent of all colleges in the United States have transitioned to at least one co-ed dormitory.
In addition, an estimated 207 colleges now allow students to share a room with whomever they choose.
They call it gender-neutral housing. You may be quite surprised by which colleges are included.
However, a study conducted by Jeffrey Chang, cofounder of the National Student Genderblind Campaign to Reform Student Housing, estimates that only 1 to 3 percent of students choose a roommate of the opposite sex when given the chance.
I guess you could say, in this instance, same-sex relationships are the norm rather than the exception.
They say it's an attempt by the schools to become more inclusive and in-tune with today's social environment.
And, apparently, they're even more in-tune than you would expect.
The following question appears on the housing application At Pitzer College in California:
"Under what is your personal gender identity?"
One of the choices is "Other gender identity." There is a box next to it asking for the applicant to specify.
The applicant has the ability to write in whatever they feel fits best.
Neither of my alma maters offer gender-neutral housing, but they did introduce co-ed floors in the mid-1970s.
