Bless Yourself With Your Patience

 You can learn a lot by keeping plants or animals; there is a reason why farmers are often some of the wisest people around. Today I've been thinking about the role of patience in health. So often we expect to be able to take a pill and get results within a few minutes, as if they're magic potions. Unfortunately, as the story often goes with magic potions, there can be consequences with quick fixes, which is why lifestyle changes is considered the first line of treatment in provider training. 

 What I've noticed in clinicals has been that providers are losing faith in the ability of people to make lifestyle changes, which is why pharmacologic treatment is often the first treatment offered for whatever ailment you can name. I believe the role of educator is being lost in the business culture that permeates through healthcare, because education doesn't pay as well as getting reimbursed by insurance companies does. 

 I would love to start my own business which addresses the lack of education in the community. Providers offices feel like fast food the way patients are shuffled through; I want to create a third space that wants you to linger and be healed by your lingering because it is intentionally designed to lower your cortisol. I have experienced nurses burnt out of bedside care that are more than willing to provide caring education who believe a space like this would be a welcome and very much needed addition to the community.
