American Grammar Checkup: It's QUIZ Time!

American Grammar Checkup: It's QUIZ Time!

Pop

Last month I shared three posts on common grammar errors that can trap even the best writers when using the American style if they're not thinking clearly. I know a lot of you read the articles, but for those who missed them (or for a refresher):

#1 Questions / Statements

#2 Apostrophes in Plurals

#3 Apostrophes in Contractions

Or, of course, you can skip to the quiz below and see how you do.

One sentence below is written correctly; the others need a little help. What needs to be changed? And read carefully . . .

  • Why we should write our goals down?
  • How do we form questions in English?
  • How many cats do the Brown's have now?
  • I cant remember if she was born in 1966 or 67?
  • Do you remember anything about the 1950's?
  • Do you now were the womans room is?
  • Amy sure ate alot of taco's, didn't she?
  • How many CD's, TV's, and radios are in that store.
  • Did she graduate in the class of 64 / '64 / 64'?
  • Is Javier realy in his 30's / 30s? He look's so much younger!

Remember, you can always look at the original post to be sure of your answers.

, in terms of you're and your (or it's and its), I always suggest that we learn one of them absolutely, positively COLD. Inside and out. Forward and backward. So if the one we know isn't the one we mean, we should use the other one.

Bob Musial, I didn't say I always succeed . . . :-)

Cyndi Docy, we ALL should have paid more attention way back then! But who on earth could have known that this stuff would be important in our future? I sure didn't; I had to (re)learn a ton of rules, some of which I'd never heard of (that I could remember, anyway), and some of which had changed. We're all a work in progress, right? So we keep on learning.

You got me in a few places. I’m always confused with the apostrophes. You're and your are also big pain. Thank you for testing us now and again. Keep them coming. I should have paid attention during those grammar classes.

Is there a more misused/ abused punctuation mark than the apostrophe?
