A Letter From My German Friend to The USA

A Letter From My German Friend to The USA

A new form of protest

No yelling. INH screaming. No fighting.
A more efficient form of protesting:
Thousands of people standing in complete silence,
1g in squares & | 1 Turkey... Baffling the police
by creating a calm curiosity, instead of tens

Non-violence is the force that will change the world.

My friend wrote this on facebook and wants to keep her anonymity.  I will respect that but I want to repost her letter. I have known her for years and her views have always been moderate. Here is her letter.

To all my English speaking friends... Many years ago some of us met on MySpace.
We debated our political views during the Bush presidency, shared our hopes and fears and today we are still online friends here on Facebook. I am glad about that :) (And I know, I sure made "mistakes/errors" in this text, as always :D sorry for that!) During the last years, I stepped back from all political discussions and worked on a local basis with all kinds of people who were - and still are - in need of help. First I worked with children, old and disabled people, then with people who had all kinds of mental illness and during the last year I worked with refugees, in an emergency shelter, set up by the German government for 1000 refugees... I have uploaded some photos of this time, for those who are interested... It seriously was the best job I ever had. I not only met so many nice, lovely, caring people from around the world, I also learned so much about everything, about myself, about humanity, about humans in general, about cultures, religions, but also about solidarity and this special "team spirit" and about friendship, love and empathy.

Our staff members were multi-cultural, they once came from South Africa, Libanon, Bosnia, Kosovo, Turkey, Venezuela, Afghanistan, Iran, Poland, Russia. Our residents who fled their countries came from Syria, Iran, Iraq, Libanon, Egypt, but also from Eastern Countries, like Mazedonia and Tajikistan and Azerbaijan... to name just a few. All of these people, stuff members as well as refugees/residents “grew together”, in spite of our differences... there were people from countries like Iraq and Syria, who never were in European Countries before... Men who grew up, by learning that to beat and rape their wives is a "normal thing". Women who didn`t know anything about equal rights. Muslims, Sunnits and Shiites, Christians, Jews, even homosexual people, all of them lived together - peacefully most of the time - in very small, narrow, spaces within these emergency tents... It worked very well - sure there were problems sometimes - but without any kind of privacy, we all would have our bad moments at some point. We worked hard to make sure that these people got all the help and all the things they needed. So they got food, clothes and money.... we taught them speaking German, we taught them about our history and what this country stands for today... they learned about our laws and the daily life.. And more importantly, we all learned about each other.... We learned to respect the other view of life, the other way to practice religion, the different cultural realties, in short, we learned to respect the human being behind all of that... because in the end, this is all that matters... By knowing that, it makes it really hard for me to read about all the hate that is spreading around the world against refugees and Muslims, even harder when one of those who is spreading this hate openly, is the President of the United States... I really cannot find words to describe how I am feeling about this. The United States of America always was the leading country with regards to democracy, freedom, freedom of mind and human rights... well it already changed many years ago, silently (I always warned for such a change remember?) but this freedom and the democracy was at least still "acceptable" Right now - exactly that happens what always was one of my worst nightmares. An insane man with narcissistic traits is the elected president of the United States, having the power to destroy the world, elected not by the majority of the people but by the "system" - exactly this system, so many Americans are still proud of. - A man, who is signing executive orders --> "dictator-like".. - A man, who is "replacing" important people in important positions....--> "dictator-like" - A man, who is firing lawyers because he doesn`t like their decisions.... --> "dictator-like" - A man, who is banning people because of their nationality and their religious beliefs from entering the US, even those who already live there legally for many years... --> "racist-islamophobic-like" - A man who wants to build walls, to stop immigrants and criminals --> “small-minded” - A man who is billionaire having business ties to many countries and governments.. including countries like Saudi Arabia, Russia, Turkey, Egypt... --> “for-sure-not-presidental-like” Seriously... ?

There is going something deeply wrong... You know, this is not my business, this is not our German- or European business, all of this, does not effect us very much, so far. The muslim ban does effect some of our dual-citizenship holders --> very, very sad days <-- and I do feel the need to write a little warning...
The problem is - from what I read - that still too many Americans believe that this, what happened to many countries before, still cannot happen to them, to their democracy, to their constitution... But sadly IT CAN HAPPEN everywhere to everyone! Such a "seizure of power" is not dependend on the system - it is unbelievable what fear and a "wrong sense of national pride" can do to the human mind and to get people to vote against their interests... it just happened - or better - it is happening in the US and you could follow a similiar process in Turkey and a few decades ago in Germany...

Those who know me - and a lot of you even met me personally - should know, that I am not someone who lives in fear, nor do I have paranoia, nor am I one of those conspiracy theorists, I think I am a rational thinking person, I do not believe in religion, but in kindness and I believe that my right is your right too, as it is the right of every single person in this world... It is possible to live together in peace, the last decades did show that... But I really have very, very bad feelings when I follow the news and I really fear that this will have a very, very bad outcome for the entire world... We do have such "Trump-voters" and parties with similar "Trump-views" over here and this mindset is growing again... every country in Europe has these groups of people and it is really scary to imagine, that they also gain power...
This time we should stand up earlier against all those who spread fear and hate... against all the people, who are trying to devide the world, against those who are trying to convince people that some lives matter more than other lives...
This time, no one can sit it out... I know that so many people in the US are protesting and fighting with legal measures, don`t ever stop...

Just a warning from an old German friend!
Good luck!

I don't think ISIS can be defeated under Trump. As you put it, "it must be done in coalition with Islamic Nations," that I do agree with. It won't happen with a President Trump or as I like to call him #45. I can't even refer to him as President (yes, I said it) ;-) Trump won because many people were disenfranchised Bernie supporters who A. Stayed home and didn't vote B. Voted to spite Hillary because they did not like her, C. People's choices in news organizations sway who they vote for, and one media channel in particular, has always been anti-Obama which helped to further Trump's agenda, D. Nationalism whether some agree or not and lastly E. People who don't do their homework and truly saw Trump as this Savy businessman who could run a country. I agree, those who didn't vote have no right to complain NOW- I hope they will learn a lesson from all of this. We didn't deserve him and agree, the world didn't. Did you hear about him threatening to send troops to Mexico to go after 'the bad hombres, " today?!! And, he was rude to the Australian PM over refugees and the call was over fairly quick. Good job Trump.. 2 of our Allies- Australia was the first to fight w/the US during Vietnam.

Trump's team needs to talk to the countries involved in territorial disputes in the South China Seas before making stupid blanket statements like they just did. Seriously incompetent.

I am saying this presidential election had more media coverage than any election in history and it went on for well over a year. The American people had plenty of time to formulate opinions one way or another. The American people voted and Trump was elected democratically. Your nation chose your president. What did people expect? That he would change? You now have a president that is acting on his campaign pledges. Again, what did you expect? I know you voted Hilary, but what about all those that didn't vote. They don't have a leg to stand on by complaining now. And ISIS can be defeated, but it must be done in coalition with Islamic nations and the vacuum cannot be filled with puppets. Trump's actions have played into the hands of ISIS recruiters and the World will suffer the consequences. Trump needs to be stopped. We didn't deserve this.

I love hearing others views when it comes to countries we only hear about via the Media or in print. Yes, many are concerned about Human Rights Issues and I do pray that will change since those Governing China are changing their views as you pointed out. I had no idea Japan had become so stagnant, that's sad to hear. In the 80-90's they were booming. I hate to say this but I'm just waiting for the Trumpster to provoke China soon. This man or shall I say those who steer him want to dominate the Globe, some would disagree with me.

I think Russia is trying to emerge in that arena too. I could be wrong but something smells of it.

I hate the slogan "America First." It makes us sound elitist and yes, as Isolationists. I pray we ALL get through this unharmed. I care about the entire world as you and many do Dean. As for Countries putting their citizens first, that's a given.

Do you mean "America is getting what it deserves," Because the people voted for Trump, Dean Owen? That confused me. I fear what will follow too. I don't think anyone can defeat ISIS unless they kill many, many innocent human beings and even then, there will always be a 'form' of ISIS. There are differing opinions on how ISIS came to be. Some say Russia backs and funds them. We've always been told they formed after we invaded Iraq. I fear if the US or any Country for that matter thinks they can defeat ISIS, the big bombs come out and much of civilization will be forever defeated. Whats ironic- many of us predicted that if we went to war against Al Qaeda another faction would rise and they did, ISIS aka as ISIL. They are like breeding rats, hard to defeat.

With globalisation came a need for nation's workforces to compete. The Western hemisphere is losing out to an Asian workforce that is willing to work harder, longer, and for less money. These protectionist measures are a direct but unfortunate result of this, and an all out trade war will ultimately benefit neither side. Innovation and IP is less and less a factor. The only way to compete in this era of globalisation is to increase productivity. The Chinese will be unbeatable as the up and coming generation benefits from a Western education at top schools plus a highly motivated workforce willing to do what it takes. This is very different from what we saw in Japan in the 80's. Japan will continue to stagnate as it is a culture of doing things by the book and every corporation is so wrapped up in bureaucracy, nothing ever gets done. I am in a rather lonely position as a Westerner who is a fan of the Chinese government as most are blinded by human rights issues. What they don't understand is that the govt here is sensitive to these issues but now is not the time. Social instability can easily derail the tremendous progress of the last decade. There will be a time to discuss freedom of speech, democracy, Tibet and other issues, but the time is not now. The Chinese govt is acting in the best interests of the majority, and I can tell you, the majority of people are extremely happy with the government. I am not a fan of corporate governance in China, but that is to be expected. Most of the current business leaders grew up in a dog eat dog world and would do anything to get ahead. That will change with the upcoming generation of Western educated Chinese who will import Global Best Practices and adopt them to a uniquely Chinese model. Apologies for going off-topic. Once in a while I like to get my views off my chest.

Every country has a right to put their citizens first. Even China agrees - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7J6wFa-vYc "America First" is a great policy if enacted with consideration to the World at large. Unfortunately America elected a leader who is clueless as to the potential consequences of his actions. But he is a result of a democratic process that is clearly flawed. I have long stated that a strong central government, if it is the right one, will always produce superior results since there is no reset every 4 or 8 years. Singapore and China have had the right governments in place. China has had wrong governments in the past, but the current one is steering the country into huge prosperity, and it's foreign policy cornerstone is to focus on win-win scenarios. America perhaps needed a reset. A slap in the face. A reality check. This hopefully short Trump presidency is it. Let's hope we all get through it unharmed.

America is getting what it deserves, but the rest of the World isn't. I fear 911 will be minuscule compared to what is to come. Trump may very well defeat ISIS just as Bush toppled Saddam, but I fear for what will follow.

Brian, I think I understand quite well that you don't like Barack Obama, however- he was not the topic of her letter. As for the rest, I have no clue where you come up with some of what you say.

Thank you for your well thought out and common sense comment . I depending on our checks and balances to make sure the rule of law is followed to a "T". :)

Thanks for sharing this post, Lisa, which we should all think about with utmost conviction and concern. It's unconscionable for any government to intentionally discriminate against any group based on religion and/or a long list of other discriminatory factors. Discrimination is in fact a socalled "slippery slope" because while one group is targeted today, it's just as likely that another group might be targeted tomorrow. Therefore, it's very refreshing and promising to witness so many people from so many countries standing up and speaking out against perceived injustices and potential unlawful action. The USA has a strong system of checks and balances which has worked well for 240 years. Some courts have already spoken out via their rulings and other courts are sure to follow. This gives me hope for better days ahead.🇺🇸

Agree Pascal Derrien, he is not the focal point, hes the distraction.

it's everybody's business when stuff goes wrong I would have loved to witness people reacting as strongly for other causes in the previous years but reassuring to see there is some kind of wake up, in a twisted Trump may have awaken sleepy consciences the only word of caution I would have is not to fall into the one dimensional approach of him being a focal point.
