A George Jetson Moment: With Deb Helfrich
After putting my life on hold for a bit and tending to family matters, my engine has been sputtering for a little while as I've been trying to get back on track. Sometimes we all just need a good "boot in the ass" my father would say...if he were here. So get on with it already! Fortunately for me, I have a partner who isn't afraid to do just that. Finally, after almost 17 years together, I am learning not to take it personally. Sorry dear, I'm a little slow on the uptake;-)
Being technologically challenged myself, I am constantly squawking with the questions. How do I do this or how do I that? Navigate here, navigate there...navigate everywhere. It's like trying to teach your kid how to drive! It's very draining...especially when you've just had an exhausting day at work. All you want is to come home and put your feet up.
Why can't I be more like Edith Bunker and come running from the kitchen with a hug and a kiss and the offer of a cold beer? Again, I'm sorry dear, but you did not marry that. The other day we got the new "Archie" chair for the living room. Now we are sparring over who's chair it is. Our daughter has decided to step in and claim as her own. Probably the best case scenario for maintaining domestic bliss;-)
The other night I was struggling to download Skype to my new computer. I wanted to connect with Deb Helfrich for a video chat. I've been looking forward to a face to face with Deb for a while now. Since she lives in Seattle and I am here in the Boston area, Skype is a perfect solution.
It always fascinated me as a kid, watching the cartoon, "The Jetson's." How cool was it that George could have a conversation with Mr. Spacely in another room...and actually see him on a monitor! We didn't have computers then and it seemed like something from outer space. ET phone home...right? Well, here we are...The extra-terrestrials from our childhood. Finally, I would have my George Jetson moment with Deb Helfrich!
Well, since Skype is not necessarily the most user-friendly application for a computer illiterate like me, of course I enlisted the help of my significant other. After a brief eye roll I was instructed where to put the key. No!....not there;-) Now it was up to me to learn how to drive the thing.
Off I go on my driving lesson...without a chaperone! So many windows so little time. Perhaps I should not embark on such endeavors at 10:00 pm after a cocktail...okay, two cocktails...But who's counting;-)
Anyway, I managed to set up the account. The first thing I notice about Skype is you have to be very careful about what can be seen in the background. You don't want to give anyone a "birds-eye" view into your home;-)
Then it was on to the contacts. Where the hell are the contacts?? After a couple of tutorials I discovered I was too bleary-eyed to continue. I would have to pull over for the evening and get some shut eye! I needed some "restorative" sleep Deb called it...I call it, "Sleeping it off!"
After a good night's sleep I got back on it...Hmmm, no one is answering my connection requests...What gives? The entire day goes by without a peep..."Guess no body wants to talk to ya," squawks that internal mocking bird. Ah, buzz off! I obviously missed something. The next morning I get a text from Skype..."Hello, since you are not smart enough to activate your caller ID by yourself we have done it for you;-)"
Well, it didn't really say that...But that's how I felt! Okay, cool! Let's do this thing. First things first...at least look presentable. Nobody wants to peer into their computer screen and see someone that looks like they just rolled out of bed. Around here we call that "salad head."
Alright, good enough. I've put on my face and I make the call. I have my moment...my "George Jetson moment" with the amazing Deb Helfrich. She is just as impressive as I thought she would be. But there was something more. She is an extraordinary presence with great compassion for others.
I found myself very comfortable and her very approachable. It was like wrapping yourself in a warm blanket and sipping tea with a friend...or sipping a good bourbon. But it's too early in the day for that...Another time Deb;-)
So great...You had your big moment with Deb Helfrich...now what? Oh, a great many things to be sure. We are hopeful that our idea to collaborate on a project will resonate with many of you. What did we talk about? Well, I have carried on long enough for now. I guess you will just have keep an eye out for the details;-)
THIS JUST "BUZZED IN"...
Wanna have a chat? Deb Helfrich and I are starting a series of small group conversations to bring more harmony, peace, and possibility into our lives. Our first topic is on GRIEF...How do we transform our grief from being an obstacle to be overcome into an opportunity for growth and change? We'd love to hear your voices and see you beautiful faces! It would be our pleasure to meet you;-)

Deb \ud83d\udc1d Helfrich in a face to face exchange like this really defines the power of the internet. Deb is one of the most extraordinary writers out there...unmatched on any platform I have seen thus far. But she is also one of the most down-to- Earth individuals you will ever meet. She gives of herself in a way that is rarely seen in this world of "me first," and asks nothing in return. It is time for that to change for her. The actual moment of impact comes when you see her in "real" time. Hearing the vibration of her voice as it strikes a visceral chord of familiarity is a "connection" that cannot be experienced in any other way. The energetic current is now "plugged in" and ready for action. She has a lot to offer the world;-)
