5 Supplements to Avoid

5 Supplements to AvoidThe supplement industry is a billion-dollar industry, with Americans spending about $30 billion per year on vitamins and supplements. While there are some health supplements that are fine to take, there are supplements that should be avoided.

Fish Oil

Fish oil is recommended because it has healthy omega-3 fatty acids. The main concern is that fish oil supplements can cause bleeding since they thin the blood which can lead to stomach bleeding. Other concerns are that there are impurities and possible toxins in fish oil pills. Getting omega-3 from foods like fish, ground flaxseeds, and walnuts is healthier.

Many multivitamins should be avoided because they contain synthetic vitamins and unhealthy fillers. Synthetic vitamins can do more harm than good when taken and can be made from chemicals. Too many believe that multivitamins will take the place of a healthy diet. Taking multivitamins can cause a person to get too much of a certain vitamin, which can even be toxic.

Everyone knows the importance of calcium in a healthy diet. But getting calcium from supplements is not healthy. Calcium can affect the artery walls, which can lead to heart attacks. In fact, studies have found that calcium supplements can increase the risk of heart disease, heart attacks, stroke, kidney stones, and colon polyps. It best to get calcium from foods like yogurt, leafy greens, chia seeds, and tofu. And for strong bones, weight resistance exercises are a great benefit.

Vitamin D

Getting too much vitamin D from supplements can lead to hypervitaminosis D, which causes a buildup of too much calcium. This is rare but can happen if you take too much vitamin D. If a blood test shows someone is low in vitamin D, then a supplement will be necessary until healthy levels are restored. Otherwise, it is best to get vitamin D from foods like salmon, egg yokes, and being in the sun for 10-20 minutes per day.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C can be found in many fruits and vegetables. Taking too much vitamin C in supplement form can lead to a higher risk of getting kidney stones. People have a tendency to gobble up vitamin C supplements and gummies, and this is when health problems can occur.
