Paris bronze Matsuyama stolen in London

Hideki Matsuyama (JPN), who won a bronze medal in men's golf at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, will not be accompanied by his caddie for the first round of the PGA Tour's Playoffs (PO) following a theft while traveling to the United States.

According to Japan Golf Digest on Friday (Jan. 15), Matsuyama was traveling to the United States from the Paris Olympics to compete in the PGA Tour POs when he and his caddie were robbed in London, England, during a layover.

Matsuyama won a bronze medal in men's golf at the Paris Olympics, tying for third place behind Scotty Schauffler (USA) and Tommy Fleetwood (GBR) at Le Golf Nacional in Guiancourt, near Paris, France, on Aug. 4.

He was then scheduled to compete in the St. Jude Championship, the first round of the PGA Tour's POs, in Memphis, Tennessee, USA, starting on the 15th, when the incident occurred on his way to the United States.

Matsuyama, who lost his wallet, reportedly managed to keep his Olympic bronze medal and passport, but his caddie Shota Hayato and coach Mikihito Kuromiya lost their passports and will not be able to travel with him to the United States.

Hayato and Kuromiya will have to return to Japan and take steps to get them replaced.

They are expected to arrive in the U.S. in time for the season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta, Georgia, on Sept. 29 at the earliest, Japan Golf Digest reported.

“There is a chance they can make it, but I have to think it's close to 'zero,'” Matsuyama said, adding, ”I feel like all the responsibility is on me. I'm going to play as if I'm back to my old self before I had a coach.”
