General Description of Duties
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
This is full-time graduate level work, assisting the County Administrator and key staff with program and policy development to include the development and implementation of the County's Strategic Plan, legislative program, and other assigned special projects and research and analysis activities, while gaining significant professional experience and an increased knowledge of the operations and management of Leon County government.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Assists the County Administrator, Deputy/Assistant County Administrators, and other staff with the implementation of County programs, special projects and any other assigned research and analysis activities. Independently conducts research and analysis activities on assignments as directed by lead staff. Collects relevant data and other research materials. Confers with County government staff and external stakeholders. Prepares and presents oral and written reports on special assignments to supervisor. Performs related work and special assignments as required.
Assists with the development and implementation of the County's Adopted State Legislative Program and other policy development initiatives as assigned. Researches and analyzes issues. Prepares reports and memorandum on key legislative and policy issues impacting Leon County. Serves as a liaison with County state contract lobbyists, external agencies and officials, as directed by staff. Attends and participates in state legislative meetings, conferences, and events. Assists staff with the identification and monitoring of legislation. Performs other assigned legislative and policy special projects.

DIFFICULTY
Exercises sound independent judgment, including the ability to interpret County policies and perform outreach to broad internal and external constituencies. Work requires initiative and creativity to complete assignments independently. Deadlines will be very important in this position. The intern will be required to work on numerous projects simultaneously with other individuals, departments, and County staff to meet project deadlines. Intern will be required to accomplish numerous tasks within deadline constraints. Intern must have the ability and initiative to design and implement a research and analysis process.

Supervision Received
The supervisor makes assignments by defining objectives, priorities and deadlines, and assists the employee with unusual situations that do not have clear objectives. The employee plans and carries out successive steps and resolves problems and deviations in accordance with instructions, policies, and accepted practices. The supervisor reviews the work for technical adequacy and conformance with practice and policy. Employee must be autonomous.

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CUSTOMER CONTACT
These contacts consist of the Deputy County Administrator, HR Director, Resource Stewardship Director, Supervisors/Division and/or Program Directors concerning project status/strategy. Contact is also made with County legislative delegation members and staff concerning project status and assistance in implementing the County's Legislative Program.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSCIAL DEMANDS
Work mainly indoors. Work primarily in a climate-controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential. Work mainly at a desk, usually seated in a chair.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Knowledge of the general operational practices of state and county government.
Knowledge of basic accounting or budget principles.
Knowledge of Human Resource Management techniques and practices.
Skill in written and verbal communication.
Skill in data collection and analysis and computer efficiency, including Microsoft Office Programs (Excel, Word).
Ability to take on multiple tasks and meet set deadlines.
Ability to organize and present clear and concise oral and written reports.
Ability to identify, monitor, and timely report on and advocate for legislation or other issues that impact County Government.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Must have received a Master's Degree in Public Administration or a similar field, within twelve (12) months prior to or before the start date of the Management Internship Program; or must possess a Bachelor's degree in Political Science, Business, or a related field and be currently enrolled as a graduate student (less than four courses away from earning a master's degree) and be able to obtain a Master's Degree before the ending date of the Management Internship Program.
Necessary Special Requirements
Must be in good standing at the attending local university.

FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt. The Intern is hired to perform professional (entry) level work in various administrative fields.
