Position Information

New Hanover County Public Library seeks a customer-focused, team-oriented part-time Customer Service Library Assistant at the Pleasure Island Library to provide comprehensive and accurate assistance to patrons of all ages. This is a 20-hour permanent position with benefits.

As the primary point of contact for library services, the position requires extensive interaction with customers and co-workers at a public desk. Position expectations include, but are not limited to:

Connecting New Hanover County's diverse residents to the informational and enrichment services the library offers
Guiding visitors of all ages in the effective use of the library collection, facilities and services
Assisting patrons with registration and checkout
Providing support in downloading e-content
Operating and troubleshooting self-check machines, printers, computers, and other library equipment
Recommending and locating appropriate print and online content to meet individual needs
Creating attractive and timely displays featuring library resources
Protecting each customer's right to privacy and access, adhering to the and

Required Skills and Knowledge

Strong oral and written communication skills
Proficiency using computer technology
Ability to communicate in positive, inclusive terms with all people
Flexibility and willingness to adjust to a constantly changing work environment.

Physical Activities and Demands

May spend up to several hours a day in a stationary position to assist customers
Occasionally moves and positions bins of books which weigh up to 30 pounds
Positions, places, and removes books and other library materials around, onto, and from shelves at a wide range of heights
Communicates and exchanges information and ideas with customers and coworkers throughout the workday
Operates a computer, cash register, and other electronic devices throughout the day

Qualifications

An Associate Degree and one year of library, bookstore or other frontline customer service experience.

Alternatively, individuals may possess training and experience equivalent to the above, as well as demonstrate the ability to successfully perform the essential duties of a Library Assistant.

Hours
20 hours per week. Weekends plus two evening shifts (4-7 pm) and other flex hours to fill branch needs and meet 20 hours. Schedule varies.
