    Position description



    Junior or Assistant Specialist - Nicolas-Avila Lab

    We look for a person specialized in the area of immunology. Specially in macrophage biology and its role in homeostasis and pathology.

    The responsibilities for this person will include: carry on independent laboratory work and support other members of the team; perform data collection, analysis and interpretation; participate in laboratory group and other meetings, presentation and discussion of the obtained results, writing protocols, study design, and manuscripts.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Appointees to the Junior rank should possess a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) in Biology or related field or at least four years of research experience, by the time of hire.
    • Appointees to the Assistant rank should possess a master's degree (or equivalent degree) in Biology or related field or a baccalaureate degree with three or more years of research experience, by the time of hire.
    • Strong prior laboratory research experience and solid background in immunology.
    • At least one year of full-time laboratory experience.
    • Strong written and communicational skills.
    • Basic molecular biology techniques: DNA/RNA purification, PCR, electrophoresis, Western blot, transfection, ELISA.
    • Cell cultures: maintenance, cell isolation and culture, differentiation and activation of leukocyte populations, cryopreservation.
    • Applicants' materials must list current and/or pending qualifications upon submission.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Previous experience with mouse models: holding, injections, perfusion, organ isolation, blood collection (more detailed: IVIS imaging, adoptive cell transfer).
    • Flow cytometry: single-cell suspension preparation, staining, acquisition, and analysis, the knowledge of antibody panel design and advanced flow data analysis.
    • Tissue cryosectioning, OCT-embedding, immuno-histochemical staining.
    • Bright field and fluorescence confocal microscopy, image quantitative analysis.
    • Data visualization and presentation (poster/oral presentations, writing scientific papers).
    • RNA purification for bulk-RNA sequencing.
    • Intend to pursue doctoral study in biomedical sciences.

    Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.

    See Table 24B for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $51,300 - $65,900.
