- Provides routine dental prophylaxis, takes diagnostic radiographs, and assists dentist during examination
- Provides nonsurgical scaling/root planing and periodontal maintenance procedures as diagnosed by the dentist
- Uses dental instruments to check and clean gums.
- Feels lymph nodes to detect swelling or tenderness associated with dental disease.
- Examines gums for sores or disease using probes and other dental instruments.
- Summarizes findings and discussions with patients when dentist comes in to complete exam.
- Applies fluoride and other cavity protectors.
- Charts and records conditions of disease for diagnosis and treatment.
- Hands off patient to front office staff for scheduling of next appointment(s).
- Completes clinical notes for every patient interaction.
- Takes and develops X-rays and intraoral photographs.
- Administers local anesthetics, as directed.
- Provides patient with proper instruction for oral hygiene and treatment of disease.
- Sterilizes or disinfects instruments and operatories, sets up instrument trays, prepares materials.

- Education: graduate of an accredited dental hygiene program, school or college
- Experience: 1-2 years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience
