    Automation Design Engineer - Mechanical

    Pieper Automation is expanding and looking for an Automation Design Engineer (Mechanical). Entry level and experienced candidates welcomed. The Automation Design Engineer (Mechanical) will be responsible to design custom mechanical machine designs, industrial robotic cells, develop associated mechanical drawings, travel to customer facilities to document existing equipment, generate bill of materials, and help to identify machine safety mitigation.

    Responsibilities

    • Work under the direction of the Department Supervisor and Machine Safety Teams to perform pivotal functions in a challenging machine safety-oriented workplace. Travel, in-state and out, to customer facilities to assess, measure, document, design, and mitigate safety issues with existing equipment.
    • Develop automation and safety projects from concept to fruition using industry-accepted practices. Use creativity and work with the engineering and machine safety teams to develop conceptual ideas into working plans.
    • Work with the production team and field team to develop plans into deliverables. Organize and manage project documentation and provide quotes and scopes of work to customers.
    • Interact with project managers, CAD designers, engineers, and the machine safety team to answer technical questions.
    • Collaborate with electrical and control system engineers to integrate mechanical designs seamlessly into overall automated solutions.
    • Participate in design reviews and provide insights into the mechanical aspects of the project.
    • Utilize Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software, Solidworks, to create 3D models and simulations of mechanical designs and AutoCAD LT for 2D layouts.
    • Document existing machines and layouts in both 2D and 3D for safety mitigation layout purposes.
    • Create safety mitigation designs based on knowledge gained while performing functional spec.
    • Conduct feasibility studies and assess the mechanical aspects of automation projects.
    • Connect professionally with Pieper personnel and contractors while providing direction for installations.
    • Interact with customers offering technical expertise.
    • Have a basic understanding of machine safety practices.
    • Create project proposals based on findings while on customer site.
    • Collaborate with vendors to secure products for on-time delivery.
    • Write PO's and order parts from vendors.
    • Collect customer requirements.
    • Assist in field work with a machine safety engineer.
    • Maintain files and quality checks.
    • Perform functional specification of existing equipment at customer facilities.
    • Project reviews, construction support and field verification.
    • Select appropriate hardware and instrumentation for application.
    • Review bid/spec plans and perform material estimates for projects.
    • Work with Project Manager to develop project plans consisting of budget, timeline, resource requirements, BOM's, and other project documentation.
    • Design custom machinery per customer and project specs within a given budget.
    • Design custom robotic cells per customer and project specs within a given budget.
    • Design custom guarding mitigation identified during functional spec visits to customer facilities.

    Requirements

    • Associate's/bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of experience and education in engineering or a related field.

    Entry level - 10+ years' experience in the industrial automation field (less than 2 years' experience requires education in related field).
    * Proficiency in CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar tools. (CSWA/CSWP preferred).
    * Friendly professional demeanor: ability to follow through on tasks and work independently.
    * Individual must be able to work independently, meet deadlines and budgets, work on multiple jobs simultaneously, and fulfill all job requirements within a timely fashion.
    * Positive safety attitude and personal integrity - both are non-negotiable.
    * Be willing and capable of completing personal development plans for self and subordinates (when applicable) preferred. Desire to learn and grow personally and professionally required.
    * Ability to travel up to 50% of the time.
    * Strong customer service skills with the ability to understand the customer's point-of-view.
    * Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with various levels of personnel including customers, vendors, managers, field and office workers.
    * Ability to work independently or within a project team.
    * Ability to multi-task and prioritize various daily responsibilities.
    * Ability to effectively use Microsoft products such as Word, Excel, Teams, and Outlook.
    * Basic understanding of safety regulations and standards in mechanical design and automation.
    * Basic knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
    * General automation product & terminology knowledge.
    * Basic understanding of how to read a tape measure and other measuring devices.
    * Ability to convert standard inch measurements to metric and vice versa; may use a program.
    * Ability to assemble complex automation equipment is a plus.
