    Virginia Commonwealth University Health System is seeking to inspire students to learn more about careers at VCUHS to achieve their full potential personally and professionally during their school year.


    Under direct department supervision, a Student Worker will assist with various assigned duties/projects to include clerical and administrative assignments (filing, data entry, processing of work orders, analyzing data, scanning, etc.), special projects, or other job related duties as assigned.

    Chief objective of this position and age group(s) to be served:


    The practice of interventional radiography student technologist is performed under direct supervision of a licensed and/or certified radiologic technologists responsible for the administration of ionizing radiation to humans of all ages (newborn to geriatric) for diagnostic, therapeutic, or research purposes.

    An Interventional Student Technologist, under the direct supervision of a licensed and/or certified radiologic technologist, performs radiographic and other procedures and related techniques, producing images at the request of and for interpretation by a licensed independent practitioner.

    Interventional Radiography integrates scientific knowledge, technical skills, patient interaction and compassionate care resulting in diagnostic information and/or therapeutic outcomes. An interventional student technologist recognizes patient conditions essential for successful completion of a procedure.

    An Interventional Student Technologist must demonstrate an understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology. Interventional student technologists must maintain a high degree of accuracy in radiographic positioning and exposure technique. They must possess, utilize, and maintain knowledge of radiation protection and safety.


    Interventional Student Technologists must remain sensitive to the physical and emotional needs of the patient through good communication, assessment, monitoring, and care skills.

    Participation in quality improvement processes and continuous assessment of performance is expected.


    Interventional Student Technologists must think critically and use independent, professional, and ethical judgment in all aspects of work Engagement in continuing education to enhance patient care, public education, knowledge, and technical competence is expected in this role.

    The scope of practice for the Interventional Student Technologist includes:

    Determining radiographic exposure factors under direct supervision.

    Assisting LIP with fluoroscopic and specialized interventional radiographic procedures under direct supervision.

    Performing non-interpretive fluoroscopic procedures under direct supervision as prescribed by a LIP.

    Applying the principles of patient safety during all aspects of radiographic procedures, including

    assisting and transporting patients.

    Corroborating patient's clinical history with the ordered procedure while ensuring information is

    documented and available for use by a licensed independent practitioner (LIP).

    Verifying informed consent.

    Assuming responsibility for patient needs before, during, and after procedures.

    Preparing patients for procedures.

    Applying principles of ALARA to minimize exposure to patient, self, and others.

    Evaluating images for technical quality, ensuring proper identification is recorded.

    Providing patient education related to imaging procedure.

    Participating and/or performing ongoing quality assurance activities.

    • High School Diploma or equivalent
    • Must be currently enrolled and in good standing with a JRC Accredited Program in Radiologic Technology that is recognized by the ARRT

    Interventional Student Technologists works under the direct supervision of a licensed and/or certified Radiologic Technologist to perform or assist the licensed independent practitioner in the completion of radiologic imaging exams.


    Interventional Student Technologists works under the direct supervision of a licensed and/or certified Radiologic Technologist to complete imaging exams based on physicians written order, department protocols, and institutional safety standards.

    Interventional Student Technologists represent the goals, values, and vision of VCU Health System. Ensures adherence to regulatory standards, health system and department policies, procedures, processes, and guidelines applicable to role.

    Works under the guidance of a licensed and/or certified Radiologic Technologist to resolve basic service delivery issues.

    Additional position requirements such as shift rotations, weekends, environment, etc

    Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with your specific manager or supervisor.

    Schedules, including requirements of shift rotations and hours of work may be adjusted as necessary to meet staffing needs of the health system and are meant to not interfere with class schedules.
