    Main Purpose of Job

    This full time contractual position is responsible for the security and care of patients at Maryland Department of Health (MDH) facilities where care is provided to residents who have been deemed not criminally responsible for committing felonies or crimes charged with. These patients are sent to John L. Gildner RICA (JLG-RICA) primarily for competency attainment. They are transferred to JLG-RICA from detention (DJS) or a state hospital and can be physically aggressive at times. This position may be required to move and position patients or apply physical restraints.� This position may be assigned to day, evening, night or rotating shifts, including holidays and weekends. Employees are subject to call in during emergencies and staffing shortages or be asked to work beyond normal shifts to maintain adequate staffing needs. This recruitment has multiple vacancies for the following shifts: 1st shift (7a-3:30p), 2nd shift (2:30p-11p) and 3rd shift (10:45p-7:15a).\r

    Per the Amended Directive and Order Regarding Vaccination (MDH # issued by the Secretary of the Maryland Department of Health, effective April 18, 2023, staff in all hospitals and residential facilities operated by the Maryland Department of Health or any local health department are required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Staff includes, but is not limited to, regular and contractual employees, contractual staff, volunteers, and other state employees performing any duties at the facility. An individual may request an accommodation by providing appropriate and sufficient documentation for bona fide medical or religious reasons.\r

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education:�� High School diploma or high school equivalency�certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Correctional Training Commission regulation. \r
    Experience: None. \r
    Note: The above educational requirement is set by the Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209 of the Annotated Code of Maryland. \r

    DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    The desired candidate should possess experience working with adolescents with emotional\r
    disabilities and court involved youth.\r

    LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

    1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland. \r
    2. Some positions in this classification may be required to operate large vans to transport patients. Employees assigned these duties will be required to obtain a Maryland driver's license of the appropriate class for this type of vehicle \r

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    1. Employees who have not already done so must meet the selection standards required and successfully complete the training prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission for a Correctional Officer during their probationary period, (Correctional Services Article, Section Selection standards for correctional officer training are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations Title 12, Subtitle 10, Chapter 01 and include the following:\r
    U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status\r
    Must be at least 21 years of age\r
    A completed background investigation\r
    Oral interview\r
    Physical examination. \r
    2. Employees in this classification will be required to provide the facility with a telephone number where they can be reached. \r
    3. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations , Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.\r

    BENEFITS

    Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.\r
    Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.\r
