    Physician (Emergency Medicine)

    Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA

    Joint Base Lewis-McChord, its affiliated clinics and dental clinic are located at Fort Lewis, Washington, near the city of Tacoma.

    Madigan AMC is one of only three designated Level Two trauma centers within the U.S. Medical Command.

    Tacoma is a progressive city of 200,000 nestled between Seattle and the state capital of Olympia. The region offers the attractions of larger metropolitan areas, with a hometown feel.

    World-class museums, hotels and theaters draw thousands to downtown Tacoma while the shores of the Puget Sound and Mount Rainier inspire outdoor enthusiasts.

    The Broadway Center for the Performing Arts, Chihuly Bridge of Glass, Emerald Downs Racetrack, Emerald Queen Casino, Fort Nisqually Living History Museum, Lakewold Gardens, and the Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad represent a small sampling of the region's varied entertainment options.

    Responsibilities


    MAJOR DUTIES
    Performs as an Emergency Medicine (EM) physicians on duty in the Emergency Medicine Service (EMS) large tertiary-care medical center. Responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of all patients in the EMS during assigned shift. Patient population covers the entire age spectrum and includes pediatric, obstetric, gynecological, medical, surgical, neurological and orthopedic patients.


    Provides initial resuscitation and stabilization of patients, orders and interprets laboratory and radiographic studies and either treats and releases patient or consults the appropriate service.

    Performs all necessary procedures required to resuscitate the patient.

    Uses an understanding of the forensic and medical legal implications of cases involving all types of assault, to include sexual assault, abuse and/or substance abuse.

    Qualified to participate in the operation of a Level II Trauma Center using knowledge of trauma resuscitation and trauma facilities.

    Incumbent staffs all patients seen in the EMS, examines all patients sufficiently enough to either confirm or deny the rotating care provider's exam, reviews all charts, stamps and signs all charts of all patients seen or staffed by him/her.

    Documents encounters and time reporting along with DMHRSI as required to meet or exceed productivity and/or revenue targets (monthly/yearly) established by DHA for Emergency Medicine Physicians.

    Involved in monitoring and analysis of individual performance measurement data for purposes of continuous performance improvement in the department. Attends monthly staff meetings, participates in peer review and serves on committees as assigned by the Chief. EMS.


    Responsible for the instruction, training, supervision, and evaluation of medical students, nurse practitioner students, physician's assistant students, interns, and residents rotating through the EMS.

    Participates in the ongoing medical education of EMS assigned personnel through lectures and demonstrations, one-on-one consultations, consultations with interns and residents, and through participation in Grand Rounds.

    Serves as the EMS resident expert to interns, residents and staff, as well as physicians from other clinics or services.

    Teaches Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Advanced Cardiac 1,ife Support (ACLS), and Advanced Pediatric Life Support (APLS) through the Medical and Nursing Education Center.


    Serves as EM expert to outlying clinics, deployed units, lower level hospital, Coast Guard Rescue Center, and EMS as required.

    This consultation may be through telephonic means, telemedicine hook-ups, radio or other two-way communications.

    Performs other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Must be a US Citizen

    Must be board eligible/board certified.

    Degree:

    Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicants graduation.

    [A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States may be demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) (or a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country).


    Graduate Training:

    Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in an institution accredited for such training.


    Licensure/Certification:

    Candidates must have a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.


    For a GP-15, applicants must have 5 years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training.

    Also, the incumbent will be part of a neurology residency training program and will take part in teaching residents, staffing the resident outpatient clinic and inpatient consult service (staffing inpatient consult service is two weeks at a time and done 3-4 time per year. It is only during those two week periods that they pull call ... and this is at-home call).
